Epic kicks off a juicy October by giving away a retro masterpiece.

Epic Games Store has started October by giving PC players another opportunity to discover a classic that helped shape modern science-fiction games. This week, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster can be claimed completely free, giving players access to a modernized version of one of the most influential immersive experiences of its era.

The promotion is available until October 8, and once the game has been claimed, it remains permanently in the player's Epic Games Store library. Alongside it, Epic is also offering Buried Stars, meaning users have two very different games to add to their collections during this week's giveaway.

For many players, the biggest attraction will obviously be System Shock 2. Originally released in 1999, the game combined first-person shooting, role-playing mechanics, exploration, hacking, character progression, and psychological horror. That combination helped establish ideas that would later become increasingly common in immersive sims and narrative-driven first-person games.

The remaster comes from Nightdive Studios, a developer with considerable experience modernizing classic games. Rather than simply placing the original game on modern hardware, the studio updated several aspects of the experience, including character and weapon models, animations, controller support, and quality-of-life features. The remaster also supports ultrawide displays and frame rates of up to 144 FPS.

The story remains one of its biggest attractions. Players awaken from cryogenic sleep aboard the Von Braun in the year 2114, with no memory of what happened. The ship has become a nightmare filled with hostile machines, mutants, and the consequences of SHODAN, the artificial intelligence that has taken control of the situation.

What makes the game particularly interesting today is how much freedom it gives players. Instead of simply moving from one shooting section to another, System Shock 2 allows different approaches to combat and exploration. Players can specialize through three military branches — O.S.A., Marines, or Navy — and experiment with different abilities and playstyles.

The remaster also adds features that make the classic considerably more accessible to modern audiences. Mod support is included, while cross-platform cooperative multiplayer allows groups of up to four players to experience the campaign together. There are also 50 achievements for players interested in completing everything the game has to offer.

The second free game, Buried Stars, offers something completely different. This narrative mystery takes place after the collapse of a survival television show's set, trapping contestants and production staff beneath the rubble. The situation becomes even more complicated when a murder occurs, forcing the survivors to investigate while their trust in one another begins to disappear.

Together, the two games give Epic users a surprisingly varied selection this week. System Shock 2 is aimed at players interested in exploration, combat, science fiction, and immersive systems, while Buried Stars focuses much more heavily on mystery, decisions, and character relationships.

The important thing for PC players is that there is no need to decide whether to buy either game. Both can be claimed at no cost until October 8, after which Epic will replace them with the next weekly giveaway. The following titles will be Out of Sight and TerraScape.

For anyone who has never experienced System Shock 2, this week's giveaway provides an unusual opportunity: one of the foundational science-fiction experiences in PC gaming is now just a few clicks away from becoming part of their permanent library.
