Sometimes life seems unfair because of the situations we observe, reflecting on the post by my esteemed friend @emiliorios, about👇🏼

Persistent or Chosen Loneliness

I've witnessed all sorts of situations with elderly people in my neighborhood, and some of the loneliness is heartbreaking. Many grandparents are alone, homeless, or struggling with addiction. But the case that has affected me most is that of Mrs. Armenia, a neighbor two blocks up from where I live. She lives alone because her only son was killed several years ago. Her house was reduced in size by a nephew who, taking advantage of her situation, built a shed, leaving her with only a room with a bathroom and a small hallway to get in and out. The kitchen, and a tiny space behind it, where they wash and hang clothes without any ventilation 😱

Mrs. Armenia walks with the help of a cane. Since I moved to this area, I always saw her walking and asking for help to cross the street. I started talking to her a few months ago, occasionally bringing her breakfast and lunch. Neighbors told me that her family lives abroad and always sends her food, which she trades for cigarettes, so I stopped bringing her food.

Last week, on my way home from church, she asked me to buy her some cigarettes because her card wasn't working. I agreed, and when I got back with the cigarettes, she asked me to go to a nearby store and buy her some eggs, cheese, coffee, milk, and sardines. Because of her condition, and because we'd had a heavy downpour and the streets were very wet, she was afraid of falling. So I went, but her card still didn't work. I felt so bad for her since I didn't have any money to help her.

When I arrived, she was sitting on one of the two wicker chairs in the small hallway, which were a bit worn. I went in and was shocked to see the conditions she lived in, the house infested with cockroaches. I asked her if she had eaten yet, and she said yes. I told her I would bring her breakfast in the morning and help her clean her house.

Video of Mrs. Armenia's kitchen conditions

I started with the bathroom. Mrs. Armenia lives with four cats, and another one was just born. The cats relieve themselves on the bathroom floor, and you can imagine the unpleasant smell throughout the house, in addition to the accumulated dirt. So, on Thursday, I dedicated myself to sweeping the house and cleaning the bathroom and bedroom.

img_1791968714576_1.jpg

On Monday, I went to her house with her breakfast, and while she was eating, she told me how delicious it was and that it reminded her of when her father was hospitalized at the military hospital. I asked her if her father had been in the military, and she said no, but her brother had. So I took the opportunity to ask if he was her only brother, and she told me there were seven of them, but they were all out of the country, and she was alone here.

After breakfast, I told her I'd sit her up front, since I was going to apply a poison I'd been recommended to get rid of the cockroaches. I spent the whole morning cleaning the kitchen. You wouldn't believe how many cockroaches I had to get rid of 🫣, but the most frustrating thing for me was that they kept coming back even after cleaning, although not in the initial numbers. So I decided to repeat the same treatment next Monday, but this time I'd use two liters to eliminate more of them.

I cleaned the bathroom again to remove the cat feces and make it more pleasant, since her bathroom is in her room. I swept and mopped. My partner called to ask if I wasn't hungry, and when I checked the time, it was almost two o'clock 😅 I said goodbye and told her we'd see each other later.

This situation has made me reflect on the value we place on the elderly. Some neighbors say that one woman was a great teacher; she has no one but her five cats. The neighbors looked on indifferently, only approaching her to ask if everything was alright when they saw me cleaning. Did they think I was going to barge into her house? How can we not truly care about those around us?

The nephew, who is benefiting from a large portion of his aunt's land, is keeping her living in these conditions. It seems they are hastening her departure. I gain nothing from this work I'm doing, only the satisfaction of making her stay more comfortable. In her small space, the electricity doesn't work. She has light from a cable run from the shed her nephew built, and it only works at the end of the hallway and in the kitchen. She uses a candle for light in her room, which I consider dangerous given her condition. She has no appliances, not even a fan.

How can it be justified that a woman who raised so many children in our country, after the loss of her son and the abandonment by her family, lives in such imposed, depressing, and sad solitude, surrounded by the indifference of those around her? I am currently going through a difficult financial situation, but she is in a worse state than we are, so I am practicing selflessness. Instead of eating more, I share my food with her. I remember my grandmother saying, "Where one eats, two can eat."

And when I feel the need to abandon my work of mercy, I remember this Catholic hymn:

"I saw my brother suffer when a helping hand was all it took, perhaps he will forgive me once more. He died poor and desolate, I stood by with my arms crossed, Perhaps he will forgive me once more."

I also remember the advice of Wilson Tamayo, a Catholic I follow on YouTube, who says that if we help just one person, we would make a small but significant contribution to human dignity.

I've even reflected on what my old age will be like, whether I will find people who will lend me a hand, or who, like Armenia, will turn a blind eye and be indifferent. 😞

In the end, caring for the elderly is not doing them a favor or pitying them; it's giving them the respect they have earned. Furthermore, it doesn't take a genius to realize that, God willing, that's where we're all headed. The respect, affection, and space we give them today is the same we'll receive tomorrow. I hope this reflection touches many hearts and that we look at the Armenian community in our area with eyes of love, not indifference. God bless you.

Gracias, @cochanet
