Last night, I went to spend time with my mother at her home. As has become the norm—both at her place and mine—there was no electricity, so I was prepared for a long conversation with her. When I arrived, my mother was thrilled about some chili peppers she had harvested, and I shared in her joy over such a lovely achievement.
As we talked, night fell, and the lack of electric light made the darkness feel even deeper. Yet, the sky was beautiful, featuring a moon veiled by lingering clouds.
It was a quiet, ordinary night; other neighbors were also gazing out at the darkness. The moon stood out as a small but brilliant point of light, gently peeking through the grayish clouds stretching across the lower part of the sky. The upper expanse remained completely clear and dark, creating a stunning contrast between the vastness of the night and the moonlit sky. On nights like these, a poetic muse takes hold of my troubled mind; I prefer to think about poetry rather than souring the hours waiting for an electrical service that seems to be offering up its final gasps before vanishing forever.
Paradoxically, the images reveal thin cables crisscrossing diagonally—power lines carrying an increasingly unreliable current—which lend a realistic, melancholic, urban touch to the shot.
Curious, I turned to Google to look up the moon and its phases for September—specifically for the night of September 19, 2026. I confirmed that the moon was in its first-quarter phase (with approximately 58% to 60% of its surface illuminated). It had passed through the New Moon phase just days earlier, so it was gaining a little more brightness and presence in the sky with each passing night. It is a beautiful, serene image that perfectly captures the feeling of gazing at the sky at the end of an ordinary day. I was happy to take it in alongside my mother, even though she spoke only of green chili peppers and how she managed to harvest them before the local thieves could get to them.
