The Big Day Was This Morning And I Was Up Early To Not Miss Out
Those that follow me will remember that my grandsons special needs school was sold by the school to developers last year. The proposed new school site never materialized and they were moving around continuously for the first 5 months of the year. We were not at all happy with the standard of education being offered this year and was more like expensive baby sitters.
Finally the truth was revealed and the owners of his school had sold the business and were trying to keep as many children on the books as that is where the only real value of the business was. We started home schooling my grandson as he is extremely smart and it would not be fair to hold him back. He is the only kid I have seen who has play floor tiles and makes 3d buildings instead out of them.
We have been searching for schools over the last few months that could cater for his needs being poor eyesight as we wanted him to attend a normal school as possible. Yesterday he had an assessment day at a private school nearby to see where he is compared to other kids of his age with regard to education.
The assessment revealed that he is ahead of what is expected for his age with the one exception the second language Afrikaans which they will now catch up for him. His mathematics is far ahead of what other kids are doing in his class and the school wanted him to start today full time. We thought it would be from January and they said they can do so much now that it makes sense to keep him ahead of others in his class.
Yesterday afternoon we had to rush around and purchase school uniforms so he was ready for his big day this morning and more importantly he was excited to be going to school. The school is a private school and the teachers have more one on ones with their students and this morning when we arrived his two teachers who are responsible for him were waiting at reception for him. There is definitely an element of care at this school and they seem very organized which is very obvious in how the children are dropped off in the morning and collected in the afternoon.
When you drive into the school grounds they have beacons out for cars to follow and there are set places to drop off each class of children and the same spot for collecting each day when the teachers bring the children to each car as the parents arrive. The security is excellent which is what you would like to see. The school is not cheap and as grand parents we are covering his school fees because for myself this is a non negotiable as the child comes first for what is best for them.
His poor eye sight will be catered for and what has blow them away is his social skills as he is such a likeable child. He has an outgoing personality and will talk with anyone which we knew he had as he has no problem performing on stage in front of thousands which he did at his last school receiving a diploma from the education board of Gauteng.
He already knows what he wants to do as a career and that is a skin specialist doctor which is an odd choice for an 8 year old as it is normally a fireman or policeman with other kids his age. I think we knew he is different and clever through what YouTube videos he watches and that is documentaries on subjects like the Titanic and the solar system. A few cartoons like most kids his age, but more educational material on many varied subjects.
