Que en realidad es una broma pesada y una sátira brutal. Aunque la historia nace de una experiencia real de su director, Fred Durst, con un acosador, la película es en el fondo una crítica a la cultura de la fama y a las tóxicas relaciones meta-sociales de la era digital. Durst se está burlando tanto de los fans obsesivos como de la propia industria. Por eso, el resultado es mucho más extraño de lo que promete el tráiler, no es un thriller serio, sino un cóctel de humor incómodo, absurdo y atmósfera de cine de culto que te dejará desconcertado.
El gran catalizador de esta locura es John Travolta, quien abandona toda contención para regalarnos una actuación física, exagerada y profundamente rara (por no decir mala); su riesgo actoral es, sin duda, el mayor imán de la cinta.
Si hay que sacar una conclusión, es esta; no estamos ante una película tan "mala" por decir algo, sino ante un experimento irregular e inclasificable.

Although the story is born from a real experience of its director, Fred Durst, with a stalker, the film is ultimately a critique of fame culture and the toxic meta-social relationships of the digital age. Durst is mocking both obsessive fans and the industry itself. That's why the result is much stranger than the trailer promises, it is not a serious thriller, but a cocktail of uncomfortable humor, absurdities, and a cult cinema atmosphere that will leave you bewildered.
The great catalyst of this madness is John Travolta, who abandons all restraint to give us a physical, exaggerated, and deeply strange performance (not to say bad); his acting risk is, without a doubt, the film's greatest magnet.
If a conclusion must be drawn, it is this: we are not before a "bad" film in the usual sense, but before an irregular and unclassifiable experiment.
Critics destroyed it, but if you are drawn to controversial, extravagant cinema willing to make you uncomfortable, this oddity is exactly the kind of film you might like.

Seamos honestos, The Fanatic es un fracaso de película, pero tiene sus momentos. La idea de mostrar cómo la admiración muta en obsesión es interesante, y Travolta se lanza de cabeza a un personaje tan extraño como exagerado.
El guion, sin embargo, no se sostiene, es poco creíble y la película no tiene un destino claro. Salta del thriller, al drama, al humor incómodo sin coherencia; intenta ser provocadora pero se queda en el intento.
Hay escenas que funcionan y generan tensión, y otras que son tan absurdas que te sacan de la película.
¿La recomiendo? Solo (si tienes tiempo) si te gusta, el cine raro, polémico o esas obras tan desiguales que al menos te dan tema de conversación.
