Greetings, friends at @holos-lotus.
At last week’s Biodanza session, the theme we explored was: “Letting Go of Rigidity to Chart Your Own Path.” As I was preparing the class, I was thinking about those subtle distinctions in language: determination seems to be the opposite of fluidity; however, in physical practice, that apparent opposition tends to dissolve. Let me share this perspective with you:
Determination is earth; it requires great emotional strength. It encompasses clarity of goals and purposes, the power of decision, and willpower. Fluidity is water; it speaks to a state of relaxation, of letting go and allowing oneself to be carried along without resistance.
Speaking from the body’s perspective, we express determination through an upright posture, an open chest that clearly says, “Here I am!”, a direct gaze—perhaps even defiant toward the world—and something Biodanza has taught me is that the pelvis directs us toward action, allowing our walk to feel secure with each firm step.
When we flow, our body appears relaxed, with a harmony of movement where every part of the body is imbued with subtlety, conveying a message that says something like, “There’s no rush; everything has its time.”
So a question arises: How do I integrate these two forces within myself?

Part of the answer can be found in the theoretical mind, but through the body’s experience—in dance, for example—we discover that earth without water becomes a compact, dry, rigid block that easily crumbles—that crushing demand that exhausts us before we reach our goal. And, on the other hand, we perceive that water without earth disperses aimlessly, evaporating without achieving anything.
When Earth and Water meet, they do not cancel each other out: they nourish one another.
Fluidity lends elasticity to determination: we allow the pelvis to move forward, with an organic sway that cushions the bumps along the way. It teaches us to sidestep obstacles when we cannot cross them head-on.
Determination gives fluidity a channel, as it holds the water in place so it does not spill aimlessly, setting a clear direction for it to flow.
We integrate these two forces when we understand that firmness need not be harsh, nor does commitment have to be passive. We can stand our ground, and we can look ahead with the relaxed face and body of someone who knows where they’re going.
Developing a project, charting a course, or making a life decision requires precisely this fundamental combination: the clear vision and upright posture of Earth, together with the patience and adaptive flexibility of Water. But above all, it leads us to understand that in this integration, there are times when we are the river and other times when we are the channel that guides it.
From this perspective, in the projects or decisions you’re facing today, do you feel that you’re lacking the grounding and guidance of Earth, or the ease and patience of Water? Which element do you tend to act from most often?
