Getting Brakes Back in Shape: Flushes, Sludge, and a Seized Cylinder [ENG/SPA]

Today I had to tackle another issue with the car after sitting idle for three months. The brakes started acting up; I had to pump the pedal repeatedly to get any decent stopping power, otherwise the pedal would drop all the way to the floor and it took forever to slow the car down. I'll admit I only know the basics when it comes to the braking system—I don't know much about how the ABS module works or how pressure is distributed through the system.

So I started with the basics, the stuff I know I can fix. I went ahead and checked the brake fluid reservoir. I noticed the color had changed; it looked dark brown, and I honestly remember the last fluid I put in being blue. I understand this can happen when the fluid isn't top quality, but it had never happened to me before, so I figured the smartest move was to flush it all out of the system, replace it with fresh fluid, and make sure this wasn't the reason the car lost its braking performance.

To figure out what brake fluid to use, the cap on the reservoir tells you right on it. This ride takes DOT 4; I did some research and the main difference compared to others is its higher boiling point. If the brake system heats up too much, the fluid can boil and create vapor bubbles, which drastically reduces braking force.

To bleed the system and get rid of any potential air pockets, you have to do all four wheels. If I recall correctly, the right way is to bleed them in an X pattern, starting with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder—which in my case would be the rear passenger side—and moving toward the front driver side. Then you hit the rear driver side and finish up on the front passenger side.

Doing it this way helped me discover that the rear passenger-side wheel isn't braking at all. When I cracked open the bleeder valve and pumped the brakes repeatedly, absolutely nothing came out. The wheel cylinder that pushes the brake shoes is probably seized up, because the brake line looks solid and leak-free. I'm not sure if this kind of cylinder can be rebuilt, so just to be safe, I'm going to swap it out as soon as I can get my hands on a new one.

Over on the other rear wheel, cracking the bleeder valve actually squirted out some brake fluid. That let me cross off my biggest fear—that the ABS module was shot. I kept going with the bleeding process, but the fluid that came out was this nasty mix of dark brown and heavy black particles, almost like thick sludge or dirt. Honestly, I have no idea what was going on there, which gave me an even stronger reason to flush the whole system out and start fresh with new fluid.

Once I moved up to the front wheels and finished bleeding them, the brake pedal finally built back up its firm feel. It stopped dropping to the floor, and the brakes started biting really well—to the point where I have to be extra careful now because they grab instantly. It was a huge relief to get that part of the problem solved; now I just need to fix or replace that rear wheel cylinder.
