Talk of adventure, action, mysticism, and some humour poured into the plot. I think this well defines the movie in this review. I've seen other versions of the movie with the same title and found some interesting. There was a release of another earlier this year. I haven't watched it but it seems unusual compared to the normal plot. This version however has been the most interesting for me. Adding that it made a franchise, with this being the first movie.
Written and directed by Stephen Sommers, the adventure/action film, The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell, Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O’Connell, John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan, Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep, Jonathan Hyde as Dr. Allen Chamberlain, Kevin J. O'Connor as Beni Gabor, Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bay, and Patricia Velasquez as Anck‑su‑namun. A loose remake of the 1932 film of the same title, it takes on an adventurous journey.
The movie follows an adventurer and treasure hunter, Rick on a journey to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, together with a librarian vested in ancient Egyptian history, Evelyn alongside her brother, Jonathan. There, they accidentally awaken Imhotep, a long-buried, cursed high priest with supernatural powers, who was mummified because of an offence he committed many years ago. The plot centred around this, and also the journey to Hamunaptra.
Hamunaptra remained a myth to many until Rick found it. Evelyn, obsessed and fascinated with Egyptian mythology as the Egyptologist she was, sought him to lead her on this quest. Thankful to the findings of her brother, Jonathan. Rick wasn't the only treasure hunter and Evelyn wasn't the only one interested in the City of the Dead. Different motives, but others had interest too. This brought about the American expeditions on this quest, led by Rick's cowardly friend, Beni.
The American expeditions went to hunt for treasures. Evelyn led by Rick went to explore the myth she once only read about. The accidental awakening of Imhotep brought about an immortal being that couldn't be contained, bringing terror and death to many, particularly those involved in the quest. Imhotep was on a quest too; resurrecting and reconnecting with his old love, Anck‑su‑namun. Standing before him and that was Rick, Evelyn and Jonathan, alongside the Medjai; the group who guarded against this for years, led by Ardeth Bay.
A mix of action and adventure goes beyond just interesting to engaging. It takes one on a journey through the growing scenes to the result of the quest or adventure. That's how it works. The Mummy didn't fail in doing that. And what better way to dive into adventure than some Egyptian mythology? With a blend of live-action filmed in the Sahara Desert and computer-generated imagery, it delivered an interesting, captivating and enjoyable adventure.
The actors were good in their roles. Beyond the plot, this made me interested in seeing the sequels in the franchise. Brendan Fraser carried the lead role exceptionally, bringing in some humour. We see that with John Hannah too. Rachel Weisz displayed the obsessed Egyptologist willing to get into harms way. Arnold Vosloo carried the Imhotep character well. The CGI and cinematography are really commendable. Not to forget that the crew had to endure dehydration, sandstorms and snakes while shooting on location in the Sahara Desert.
The quest of humans and the insatiable desires of some can bring about their end. Rewarding nonetheless, if it becomes successful and we make it out alive. The movie presented that amidst the captivating action-adventure plot. Employing mysticism and Egyptian mythology made it interesting and engaging, though the mythology was mostly fictional, which I have against it as one might think it was true. Nevertheless, The Mummy is a good watch.
