Wez was deeply startled; upon hearing that childlike voice speak his name, he recoiled. The man who looked exactly like him was also afraid, whispering, "It can't be—he should be dead." Wez, meanwhile, was struck with astonishment. At that very moment, the girl held up the key and pointed toward the door at the end of the hallway, adding, "The fifth child"—a remark that left everyone in complete silence.
Without a second thought, Wez approached the door. Hearing small footsteps on the other side, he called out, "Who's there?" A few moments later, a child's voice replied, "It’s you, Wez. The real you." The man who was identical to Wez tried to stop him, warning, "Don't open that door! If he gets out, everyone will remember what they did that night." But Wez, weary of the lies, the endless photographs, and the persistent, haunting melodies, took the key and inserted it into the lock.
The man who was there handed him one last photograph, which had been tucked away on the lid of the box—so well-hidden that hardly anyone could have known it was there. The photograph showed two identical boys: one was crying in front of the house, while the other held a shovel. It also bore a short inscription in red ink: "The boy who was buried was five years old, and the one who took his place never had a childhood." Paralyzed, Wez immediately asked, "Which one of them am I?" The man simply laughed, and the door slowly creaked open. As a melody began to play, a child’s voice drifted from the darkness: "That is what we came to find out." But when the boy stepped out, everyone recognized his face—everyone except Wez.
