HOW TO CUT AND SEW A SHORTENIKA TROUSER WITH ELASTIC WAISTBAND Today, I’ll be showing you how I cut and sew this comfortable Shortenika trouser with a 2-inch elastic waistband and side pockets. This trouser is not fitted, so I allowed enough ease around the hip and body to give it a relaxed and comfortable fit.
Measurements Used: • Hip: 39 inches • Full length: 22 inches • Hip length: 9 inches • Crotch length: 11 inches • Elastic: 2 inches
CUTTING THE TROUSER To begin, fold your fabric neatly into two, making sure the edges are properly aligned. Since the finished trouser length is 22 inches and I am using a 2-inch elastic waistband, I subtract 2 inches from the trouser length while cutting. This gives me 20 inches for the main trouser body. The 2 inches will be replaced when the waistband is attached. Measure and mark 9 inches from the waistline for the hip line. From the waistline, measure 11 inches down for the crotch length and mark it clearly. For the hip width, divide the 39-inch hip measurement by four and add sufficient ease and seam allowance because this is a loose-fitting trouser. Mark the measurement on the hip line and shape the crotch smoothly. Extend the side and inner leg lines down to the 20-inch main trouser length plus 1.5 allowance for hem and mark the hem.
After cutting the font panel I place it on fold fabric to cut the back then I added as well allowance to crochet are side although.
CUTTING THE SIDE POCKET For the side pocket, mark a comfortable pocket opening along the side of the front trouser. Cut the pocket bag separately, making sure it is large enough to accommodate the hand and any small items.
SEWING THE TROUSER Start by attaching the pocket bags to the side pocket openings. Place the pocket pieces right sides together, stitch around the opening, turn them to the inside, and press neatly.
Next, place the front and back trouser pieces together with the right sides facing each other. Sew the crotch seams carefully, making sure the curves match properly. Join the inner leg seams from the crotch down to the hem. After that, sew the side seams, carefully joining around the pocket area.
MAKING THE ELASTIC WAISTBAND
The 2-inch portion removed from the original trouser length is now replaced as the waistband. Fold and press the waistband neatly to create the casing for the elastic. Insert the 2-inch elastic into the waistband casing. Secure one end first, then pull the elastic through the casing until it reaches the required waist measurement. Join the two ends of the elastic firmly. Distribute the gathers evenly around the waist. After inserting the elastic, I run three straight stitches around the waistband to secure the elastic and keep it properly positioned.
Finally, hem the two trouser legs neatly and press the entire trouser properly. Check the seams, pocket openings, waistband, and hem to make sure everything is secure and well finished.
And that is how I achieved this simple, comfortable, and stylish Shortenika trouser with an elastic waistband and side pockets. Have a beautiful and productive week ahead! 💕
