Otranto: “the Gateway to the East”

ENG

Good morning dear Hivers and welcome back to my blog.

Today I bring you to visit Otranto, in the Puglia region at the far southern tip of Italy.

It’s a wonderful city, as it marks the point where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet, creating a breathtaking landscape of turquoise waters.

It is known as the "Gateway to the East" because, geographically, it’s Italy's easternmost municipality.

ITA

Strolling through the streets of Otranto, you can sense its incredible history, shaped by the Messapians, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, and Aragonese. All these civilizations have left traces of their presence.

The heart of the city is undoubtedly the Cathedral of the Annunciation, consecrated in 1088. It houses a famous medieval mosaic attributed to the monk Pantaleone. At its center, it depicts the Tree of Life, surrounded by mythical creatures, biblical figures, and signs of the zodiac. It also holds the remains of 800 citizens of Otranto who were killed during an Ottoman siege in 1480.

Just a short walk from the cathedral stands the Aragonese Castle; I had the privilege of visiting its interior as well. Its most striking feature is its deep moat. Today, it hosts numerous cultural events and exhibitions.

Another interesting building is the Byzantine Church of San Pietro.

However, Otranto is not a city to be experienced solely within its walls. Beyond the town, nature offers spectacular scenery, starting with the sea.

Notable spots include the Baia dei Turchi, ranked among Italy's most beautiful beaches, and the Alimini Lakes, a nature oasis perfect for hiking. Another fascinating scenic spot is the Bauxite Quarry, which surprises visitors with the contrast between the fiery red earth and the emerald green lake.

If you visit Puglia, you simply cannot miss the city of Otranto! Thanks for reading.

See you next time, Delilha
