The Great Opportunity – An Iran Deal Could Cause Oil Prices to Plummet

The decisive factor lies in the Middle East. An end to military escalation and a permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz could significantly ease pressure on the oil market.

Currently, a barrel of Brent crude costs just under 114 US dollars. If the price were to fall to, say, 80 dollars, that would represent a decline of around 30 percent. However, this is a theoretical calculation, not a forecast.

A sustained drop in energy prices could substantially alleviate inflationary pressure. This, in turn, would reduce the likelihood of further interest rate hikes. If bond yields were to fall simultaneously, capital-intensive technology stocks, in particular, could regain momentum.

The Great Danger – Trump Could Strike Even Harder After the Elections

There are, however, compelling arguments against a swift peace agreement. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have reached a stalemate. Among other things, Iran is demanding an end to the American blockade, while the US is insisting on far-reaching concessions.

Donald Trump faces a political reckoning; only 31 percent of Americans currently approve of his performance in office. In the midterm elections on November 3, the Republicans will have to fight to retain their majority in Congress. Yet, paradoxically, a defeat could be the very thing that triggers a year-end rally in the financial markets.

The scenario could unfold as follows: Trump seeks a foreign policy success, reaches an agreement with Iran, and facilitates the normalization of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Energy prices fall, inflation declines, and the US Federal Reserve regains the flexibility to lower interest rates.

My personal conclusion:

While the chances of a quick agreement are slim, they are not impossible. Lately, I’ve had the impression that the Trump family is heavily manipulating the markets. Could a surprise announcement still be on the horizon in the short term?

The Strait of Hormuz angle is the sharpest part of this. If energy prices drop 30 percent and the Fed gets room to cut, risk assets get a double tailwind. Do you actually think a midterm loss would make Trump chase a peace deal, or just double down?

  • If Trump only realized how much pressure on Tehran impacts smaller countries—like how rising fuel and commodity prices affect everyday life here in Asian countries—perhaps he wouldn't treat them this way.
