I think one of the things I liked most at the beginning was Maddie’s family. Honestly, I was expecting that at some point someone would find out she’d made up her fiancé and react with a huge “ARE YOU CRAZY?!” 🤣 But no. Her family really believed her. And not only that, but they tried to understand her, support her, and help her in their own way. No one pressured her to act the way they expected her to, nor did anyone mock her concerns. On the contrary, they ended up growing so fond of the nonexistent Captain MacKenzie that they practically adopted him as a member of the family.
Because Maddie didn’t just make up MacKenzie to get herself out of a tight spot. Little by little, writing to him became a habit and, above all, a way to have someone to talk to—someone with whom she could share her thoughts, her ideas, her little discoveries, and everything she didn’t dare say to real people. And here I have to say that I found it absolutely hilarious just how elaborate her whole lie became. She didn’t just make up a boyfriend and leave it at that. She created an entire story—complete with a Scottish captain, a long-distance relationship, a war, and a future together so detailed that, when she finally decided she had to put an end to it all, she concluded that the only solution was to kill the poor man.

And that tugged at my heart a little, because that man she invented as a refuge ended up also being a representation of what she longed for and felt she would never have.
The cutest part is that her family took the existence of this supposed fiancé so seriously that they even gave her a house so she could live with him when he returned from the war🤭 I mean, Maddie made up a boyfriend, and her family ended up financing their future marital home. And, through a series of circumstances that were quite convenient for our protagonist—and quite unfortunate for her emotional stability—the military forwarded to Logan all those letters that Maddie had written over the years, thinking she was writing to an imaginary man. And one day, the man of her dreams showed up at her door, in the flesh, with the letters in his hand and ready to marry her. He literally stepped right out of the pages of her imagination!
Of course, Logan isn’t exactly coming because he’s head over heels in love with Maddie. When he returns from the war, he discovers that the Highlands have been occupied by English lords, and among the territories now in English hands is the very castle Maddie inherited from her uncle. Yes, that very castle her family had envisioned as the perfect home for her and her so-called Scottish captain. So Logan arrives with a rather practical goal: to reclaim the lands he believes are rightfully his. And since the letters claim that he and Maddie have been betrothed for years, it doesn’t hurt to pick up a wife in the process either.

One thing I liked about Maddie was the way her social phobia was portrayed. As a psychologist, I can sometimes be a little critical of how certain topics are portrayed, but here I never felt that her difficulty relating to others was used as a device to make her “the shy girl” who needs to be rescued. On the contrary, I was able to understand her feelings and enjoy watching her grow. Maddie gradually learns to trust herself more, to navigate situations that used to overwhelm her, and, above all, to discover that she can hold her own without having to become someone else to do so.
Logan is described as a gorgeous Scotsman from the Highlands, straight out of a period novel, so clearly the book knew exactly what it was doing to me. But what captivated me most about him was his personality. Logan has an enormous presence. He’s outgoing, self-assured, and the kind of character who walks into a room and makes it seem as though the space has to make a little room for him. And that contrasts sharply with Maddie, who’d rather blend into the wall than draw attention to herself. That’s exactly why I loved seeing them together so much.
From the very beginning, Logan respects the absurd situation they both find themselves in, and instead of making fun of Maddie for making up that whole story, he tries to understand her. There’s a kind of trust and intimacy between them from the very beginning, even before there’s actually a romantic relationship. Maddie had already shared so much about herself in her letters that, even though Logan was a complete stranger to her, he already knew a very intimate part of who she was.

And for Logan, those letters ended up meaning something completely different—but just as important. He was in the midst of a war, surrounded by death and a rather brutal reality, and suddenly he had the words of a woman who spoke to him of things completely unrelated to all of that. Maddie gave him a reason to take his mind off things, to remember that there was a life beyond the war, a place to return to, something to look forward to. The letters reminded him that, even as he watched people die all around him, there was still life beyond all of that.

We’re talking about a Scotsman from the Highlands—did we really expect this guy to show up handing out little flowers and speaking softly? No. Logan is intense. He’s strong, direct, passionate, and has the kind of presence that makes every interaction with Maddie charged with tension. And that’s exactly why I loved the chemistry between them. It’s not a particularly shy romance, even though Maddie is.
I also liked that Logan never treated Maddie’s shyness as something to be ashamed of. He understands that she functions differently than he does, and instead of trying to stifle her personality or make decisions for her, he encourages her to discover how far she can go. And I think that’s one of the most beautiful things about their relationship: he’s a very confident, outgoing person who’s used to making decisions, while she’s spent much of her life trying to make herself small so as not to draw attention. Seeing how those two personalities begin to meet in the middle was, for me, one of the best parts of the book.
