There are books that you read, enjoy, and eventually forget. And then there are books that introduce you to a world you want to return to again and again. I think Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997), by J. K. Rowling, belongs to that second category.
What I like about this first book is how naturally it takes us from an ordinary, rather miserable childhood into a world where almost anything seems possible. It's a story written primarily for younger readers, but I think its charm goes well beyond age.
Hay libros que lees, disfrutas y eventualmente olvidas. Y luego están aquellos que te presentan un mundo al que quieres regresar una y otra vez. Creo que Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal (1997), de J. K. Rowling, pertenece a esa segunda categoría.
Lo que me gusta de este primer libro es la naturalidad con la que nos lleva de una infancia común, bastante miserable, a un mundo donde casi cualquier cosa parece posible. Es una historia escrita principalmente para lectores jóvenes, pero creo que su encanto va mucho más allá de la edad.

The story begins with Harry Potter, an eleven-year-old boy who lives with his aunt, uncle, and cousin, the Dursleys. His life is far from happy. He sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs, receives very little affection, and grows up believing that he is just an ordinary boy.
Everything changes when he discovers that he is a wizard.

I think one of the greatest achievements of this book is Hogwarts itself.
The moving staircases, the enchanted ceiling of the Great Hall, the mysterious corridors, the different houses, and even the classes make the school feel like a place that could actually exist somewhere beyond our ordinary world.
And I love how Rowling introduces these details gradually, allowing us to discover everything alongside Harry.

Las escaleras que cambian de lugar, el techo encantado del Gran Comedor, los pasillos misteriosos, las diferentes casas e incluso las clases hacen que la escuela se sienta como un lugar que realmente podría existir en algún sitio más allá de nuestro mundo cotidiano.

There is something special about imagining yourself receiving a Hogwarts letter, buying your first wand in Diagon Alley, or traveling on the Hogwarts Express.
Even knowing that it's fiction, it's difficult not to wish that some of those places were real.

They are very different from one another. Harry is brave but inexperienced, Ron is loyal and sometimes insecure, and Hermione is intelligent, disciplined, and initially a little difficult to get along with.
But that's exactly why they work so well together.

Harry wants to belong somewhere. He wants to understand who his parents were. He wants friends, affection, and a place where he doesn't feel unwanted.
Those are simple desires, but they make him easy to understand.

I also appreciate that it doesn't try to explain everything at once. There are questions about Harry's past, Voldemort, Hogwarts, and the wizarding world that make you curious about what comes next.
Para mí, Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal es una maravillosa introducción a una historia mucho más grande.
Tiene misterio, humor, aventura, personajes memorables y un mundo mágico que inmediatamente invita al lector a explorarlo.

Of course, some situations are resolved rather conveniently, and the plot is relatively simple compared with more complex fantasy novels. But I don't think that takes away from what the book accomplishes.
Sometimes a good story doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to make you care about its characters and want to keep turning the pages.
And this book certainly does that.

I would give Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 94 out of 100.
Its greatest strengths are its imaginative world, memorable characters, accessible storytelling, and the wonderful feeling of discovering magic for the first time.
I wouldn't give it a perfect score because its central mystery is somewhat straightforward and certain developments feel a little too convenient. Still, as the beginning of a seven-book adventure, I think it's an excellent novel.
