Wearing shorts on a woodland walk turned out to be a slight mistake today. Thick brambles lined parts of the path, making it impossible to get close to some of the fungi without taking a few scratches.
Still, I managed to spot some finds from a safe distance, including a few artist's brackets entwined in the tree.
High up on a birch tree, a few smooth, birch polypores were sticking straight out. They looked just like big wooden noses growing out of the side of the trunk.
Nearby was more birch polypore showing two stages of life, an old, cracked one against the tree trunk, and a smooth, light brown shelf of new growth sprouting out to the side. The pooch did a bit of photo bombing!
I also spotted some turkey tail (I think) with their fan shaped rings breaking down dead wood. The overnight rain made them stand out as I approached.
On another tree nearby, I saw several thick, grey fungi stacked above each other. These rock hard, layered fungi are known as hoof fungus for obvious reasons.
Tucked down in the leaves, I also stumbled across a small cluster of pale, flat mushrooms with raised brown centres. I could not help but notice they look remarkably like nipples. No idea what they are.
Before heading back, I picked up a small fallen twig covered in pale, leafy lichen, perhaps oakmoss? Even though lichen is a mix of fungus and algae rather than a true mushroom, it was still an interesting thing to find resting on the ground.
