[Movie] Medellin (2023) - Review

Lately, almost all the movies I have been watching seem to send one message, “one doesn't have to be strong to win a battle.” If we are going to apply it to the general life situation, it means that we don't have to be perfect or fit before we win in life.

Medellin is a comedy, action and crime movie released in 2023, directed by Franck Gastambide and written by Franck Gastambide, Charles Van Tieghem, Starring Franck Gastambide, Ramzy Bedia, and Anouar Toubali.

The film runs for 1h 44m and it features three languages, French, Spanish and partly English.

Reda was obsessed with boxing, he trains all the time in the boxing and gym centre he manages but guess what? He had never engaged in real boxing.

Reda is a man who carries his family at heart, and he loves them with everything he has.

Brahim, his little brother, was obsessed with the famous Pablo Escobar. Being an influential social media influencer, he went about impersonating him on social media.

A viral video of men in masks taking Brahim away and asking for ransom over abusing Pablo Escobar’s reputation was seen on social media.

Reda became restless and asked his friends at the gym to follow him to Colombia to rescue his brother from the notorious cartels that took him.

Unfortunately, of the many people who promised to stand by him, only two turned up at the airport; Stand and Chafik. This means only the three of them would be confronting the dangerous cartel full of deadly men, but Reda didn't flinch.

Arriving in Colombia, they made their findings and ended up kidnapping the son of one of the most feared cartel leaders in Medellin.

Since they didn't have proof of who really took Brahim, they were just trying anything. They videoed the young man and sent threats to his people through social media.

Just after posting the video, Brahim called and told them they are in trouble, he wasn't kidnapped, he only faked it to get more views on social media.

Meanwhile the cartel leader was pissed off and sent his boys to truly kidnap Brahim.

Brahim’s selfish desire has landed them in trouble, they had to find a way to rescue him from the bad guys.

In their quest to rescue Brahim, they met a lady who linked them up with Robbie, an ex-military man who taught them how to operate firearms and other survival tricks.

One of the outstanding things for me in the movie is the comedy, the character Chafik never ceases to crack me up, I mean his physical looks and daring boldness is very crazy.

No scene got me wanting for more, like the scene where Chafik fell from the bike while they were trying to escape from the enemy and no one even noticed.

Stan's reserved and cautious attributes also made the movie great. He was always trying to avoid trouble and settle things amicably, sadly, his friends are quite his opposite.

The relationship between Reda and Brahim was also outstanding, it shows what love truly is.

The visuals were catching too. The scene where a shark ate the legs of the cartel's son was mind-blowing, in fact that scene was funny too; after struggling to pull the young man out of the water, which looked like a narrow escape, they realized that his legs were gone already.

The comedy and action mixed together was good, it made the movie entertaining and I gave them their flowers.

The environment the movie was shot in was nice, the Colombian houses especially, the way they were arranged was attractive.

One of the things that made the movie outstanding, which is “comedy,” is also the weakness of the movie. Littered across the movie are jokes and crazy activities. It's not bad but it was too much.

I will rate the movie 6/10 and I will recommend it to those interested in comedy and action movies. This one has everything put together.
