Thoughts On The Upcoming Cradle Of War Expansion In Eve Online

upcoming expo.jpg

The next expansion in Eve Online Cradle of War is almost here, arriving on June 9th, 2026. This is one of those expansions where it’s going to have something that you are into or just not at all. With it having a focus on Faction Warfare. With some new player experience overall on top.

# Faction Warfare And Military Campaigns

In the past expansions in Eve Online, even if you did not do something daily, like mining. As we had some updates not that long ago. Chances are, you have done some kind of mining, and many just enjoy doing so. Faction Warfare, on the other hand, is quite different. You have to pick a side and join it. Putting you at war with another faction, regardless of where you are in the game. It’s just something not everyone is into joining or partaking any part of.

It seems Military Campaigns will be changing that. With Cradle of War, there is now going to be seasonal campaigns. Once they started talking about people being able to mine to earn points towards it, among other things. I just knew it took an expansion I was not expecting to have anything of not for me to do into something that might keep me busy for quite some time. I've never cared much for joining a faction in faction warfare itself in the past. Opening yourself up to being attacked by the other side while just trying to mine or do other activities. This used to be something people would just toss alts into as something to do if they had nothing else.

As someone who has only joined faction warfare ones and long time ago. I really did not care for it. I felt the whole thing kind of stale. There are also just endless issues with spying and luring players into traps. Then you have people ganking their own factions to the point it even has its own term for it. With that in mind, they are playing around with the standing rules just a tad. I don’t think it will fix the issues, but at least an attempt is being made.

Now, could a new seasonal campaign fix faction warfare itself, in feeling kind of stale? It might just do that. If the outcomes from winning or losing end up being huge. I just hope they find the right balance between rewarding and changing the game based on outcomes. Along with keeping them in check, those of us who want nothing to do with that system are not finding ourselves forced to make choices. It, however, sounds like that is exactly what they want. We will see how they tune this system over the long run after that fresh new spaceship smell wears off the expansion itself.

One thing I like is that they have added in trying to create some usefulness for faction warfare again. Is adding a new line of destroyer ships that can be earned with faction loyalty points. I’ve known some people in the past who have had way too many loyalty points, so offloading them was always an issue. Players would sometimes even get scammed out of their points by trying to bulk sell a bunch of an item to someone with ill intentions. Hopefully, this adds some fresh blood that is needed to the entire loyalty point system across the game.

I myself might be tossing an alpha alt into faction warfare. It’s been so long since I've partaken in the activity. It would be fun to see some of the new combat sites they are also adding to the game.

Overall, for this part of the expansion. I think it’s giving a lot of needed life into something that has been around forever and has somewhat felt neglected. Only time will tell just how big a game change they plan on making, things like the seasonal campaign. Players could have major push back on this or lose to much of an interest.

Military campaigns also seem to be the way to get everyone involved, even if you are not enlisted with a faction for PvP. I’m hoping it adds some fresh new fun to the mix of things. It looks like the entire system will have a lot of tasks in it. Will be interesting to see how many will be PvP or faction warfare related only. I just hope they kept it broad enough for anyone to join and not just make it only worthwhile for those only in faction warfare themselves. Would be fun if I could earn a bunch of points just running exploration sites. I guess we will soon see.

New Player Experience

Eve Online, over the past couple of years, has been putting some focus on refreshing the new player experience. Eve Online was always know as that game that had a learning curve that was a cliff. Where people got pushed off the cliff while trying to go up it. For older games like Eve Online to keep going, they do need some fresh blood. Sometimes the game has an issue with far too many bitter, rich, entitled vets who have nothing to do.

Part of this change is Eve Online getting a new region of space to the game called Exordium. I’ve already covered a bit of that in the past. I think it will be interesting to see how they manage the no PvP and getting players to leave that area to play in the main part of the game.

For now, it seems they are just using reduced rewards. They have also added to the game's terms that abusing this area can get you banned. I suppose it’s not to shocking they need rules to be like that. Even more so if someone with 20 accounts decides they just want to strip mine everything in the area.

I think it could be a fun way for some older players to test out some sites they have always stayed away from. As Exordium has weakened versions of a few sites that require the fleet to run. Where a wrong move and you just lost a rather expensive ship. Expect the newer player versions of these sites to be more frigate-level instead of marauder level type of sites.

This new region of space is also where new players will get to start. I know some players who plan on starting the game after this expansion releases. They were planning to join sooner, but after hearing about the big changes. Ended up holding off for a bit.

I think overall this will be a great way to get new eyes and hopefully fresh blood into Eve Online. It is quite a complex and deep space game. One that is rather intimidating for many to even think about jumping into.

I just hope the gates leading outside of this new region. Which there are going to be four. Won’t turn into giant ganking fests. There is a chance this could make trips from one region of the empire space to the other in terms of trade hubs. A lot shorter distance for those looking to go through high-security only. So I could see them becoming choke points as well. Since even older players are allowed to travel through the new region.

Achievements

It’s kind of funny thinking eve online went this long without having any real kind of in game achievement system. They don’t even have achievements on Steam if you play the game from there.

I’ve known some players to do some silly and long grinding things in video games. All over a rather silly achievement in them. It seems this is kind of what some of them might be.

It even looks like there will be achievements for seasonal content. If anything, this is just one way to get the player base a little more active than they sometimes can be. Even more so in between major events.

If nothing else, it feels like just a fun addition to the game. I wonder why it was not done a long time ago. There has been a kind of title system that people could award to others. Along with faction warfare having a ranking title system. It seems titles will be expanded out as well with the new achievement system rolling in.

Command Carriers

For a while now, Eve Online has been hinting at trying to make carriers a more used ship in the game. I guess it was only a matter of time before something like tier 2 carriers showed up.

These ships are going to be made for giving boosts for fleets. As they can fit three command burst modules each. While there are quite a few ships made for boosting fleets. They have always been more for the smaller side of things. It seems this update is for the vets of the game who have level 5 carrier skills and might have never flown one.

Funny enough. Every time I'd go on long breaks from the game. I’d set training for the Amarr Carrier. Over my many years of taking breaks and having some extra game time run out without having to log in to start a new skill training. As far back then, the game did not have a training queue. We have now been spoiled for many years.

I still don’t see myself ever flying a carrier, let alone commanding one. Anytime I go into some big null-security alliance. It just never ends well. Lots of ISK is set on fire. Along with that, I just don’t find that area of the game to be fun. Other than when I'm exploring though it solo, trying not to get killed exploring.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this expansion is going to end up being far more deep then even I was expecting. They ended up putting out some patch notes the other day for. My opinion a month ago about Cradle of War, and now what I see it could end up doing is quite a massive change of thought about it.
