The exhibition Espectros: Enigmas de la mirada (Specters: the Mysteries of the Gaze), which is still on view at the Casa de México de España in Madrid, brings together seven Mexican photographers who invite us to look beyond the obvious.
Although we know that photography is far from being an object that objectively captures a single moment, the artists featured in this event reaffirm this through their work.
Images are not reality; reality is something that is constructed. We are not beings who perceive reality directly and objectively; perception is an active process in which reality is organized and given meaning.
When stimuli are ambiguous or information is missing, the mind fills in that information. For example, a row of dots becomes a straight line.

If we go beyond Gestalt and enter the world of modern neuroscience alongside Damasio, perception is not only an active process… it is guided by bodily memory.
We construct the meaning of what we perceive based on our previous experiences.
Therefore, in these “enigmas of the gaze,” many—if not most—of the works on display play with what is not shown in the image, with silence. From research grounded in information theory, we know that the absence of an element alters what we, as viewers, can interpret.
Welcome to this photographic exploration of the universe of perception.

Humbero Ríos invites us to engage with the projection as if each of his works were a Rorschach test card. The inkblots are replaced by images of objects in shadow, where the feeling of “I think I see something there” arises almost immediately.
This work challenges us to move closer to and farther away from each photograph in an attempt to perceive what lies beneath the shadows. The allure of the blurred image sparks our imagination.
A written guide tells us that, through this collection of silent screens presented by Humberto Ríos, the viewer has the opportunity to project their own narrative.

So far, we’ve talked about the half-light. Now comes the void, the absence. What about what isn’t there? In each of the images that follow, we find an explicit sign of what is absent.
A trace that carries as much weight—or perhaps even more—in the meaning we ascribe to the image as what is visible: abandonment, loneliness, loss...

There is no ambiguity whatsoever regarding the artist’s intentions here. A collection of small photographs presents us with a series of staged scenes designed to allow the viewer to construct their own story. Once again, what is absent—what is left unsaid—the question “What happened?”—stirs our emotions.
Once again, the mechanism of projection kicks in, and once again, the meaning is not given; we construct it ourselves.

Alinka Echeverría’s work may seem the simplest, since all the viewer sees is a row of fingerprints in a very large format.
However, the work is more complex because of the way it plays with our associations. The first impression undoubtedly takes us back to the world of crime, where a human being becomes a number and is reduced to a fingerprint.
However, once we discover that these fingerprints do not belong to criminals but to imprisoned South African anti-apartheid activists, a paradox emerges from the clash between our prejudices and the actual history.
In psychotherapy, paradox—like humor—when used appropriately, is one of the two elements that facilitate the reorganization of thought and, consequently, the perception of reality.
These displayed fingerprints, which we initially associate with criminals, take on a new meaning—resistance and dignity—once we know whose they are.

At first, Tomás Casademunt’s proposal seemed simple to me. As time went on, it took on a different meaning. I don’t think anyone doubts that a camera captures moments. That is why I believe this work is so unique.
The photographs do not show a single moment, but rather the process of a phenomenon—such as the construction of a building—from its beginning to its completion.
It feels as though we are looking at three-dimensional images, in which time takes on volume.
With this artist, what no longer appears in reality remains in the photograph, telling a story whose traces we can no longer see.

With this artist, we step away from the world of perception for a moment. Here, nature itself seems to be the phantom.
Although I haven’t fully understood the creative process, it seems to involve something similar to this sequence of steps:
Paola Dávila brings the photographic paper into contact with the waves; the water and the sun alter the chemistry of the photographic paper, and the image appears. An image that is not of the sea—though it appears to be—but rather one produced through the interaction of the sea, the sun, and her.
Here, Nature is not something passive, but rather a co-creator of the final work.

Laura Cohen - Still life [Naturaleza muerta]
According to the artist, her still-life images are metaphors for herself—self-portraits in which she does not appear.
I find it very interesting how she chooses objects as metaphors for herself, her experiences, and her emotional states.
This mechanism of projection—in which the artist imbues her work with her inner states—must be complemented by our own projection, by what we project of ourselves onto these still lifes.

Adriana Calatayud - Evidence [Indicios]
Adriana Calatayud’s exhibited work is the kind that sends a deep chill down your spine. The photographs on display stem from her research into organ trafficking—a market that vividly illustrates the dual value of human life, determined by the balance in one’s bank account.
Adriana Calatayud reveals how the organ market implies the existence of a machinery of power and control over a body that is transformed into a warehouse of spare parts for the bodies of others.
The victims are migrants… the photographs depict landscapes—devoid of bodies—with faint traces suggesting that something horrific occurred there.
Undoubtedly, understanding the artist’s intent and the story hidden within each photograph changes our perception of them—and of the value of human life.
