As an eight‑year‑old girl, I flew on an airplane for the first time in my life. My father was still alive then. He was having a decent job and earning enough to give us small joys. I remember seeing the air hostesses standing in front of me. They were graceful, confident and very beautiful to my young eyes. In that moment, I decided that I should become an air hostess too. I wanted to fly in airplanes, travel across the world, meet people from different countries and see all the beautiful places whose pictures filled my schoolbooks. That was my childhood passion.
But life changed too soon. I lost my father when I was twelve. From then on, my mother raised me alone. Her resources were limited and completing my graduation was a struggle for me. She herself became unhealthy from the shocks and hardships she had endured. I worked in a pizza shop while studying, trying to support both of us. Then, during the COVID outbreak, I lost my mother too and also lost my job. My dreams slipped further away.
Now I work in a store, alongside others who are also trying to make a living. I once wanted to fly high in the sky. Now I stand in a place filled with shelves and products, where the sky is hidden from view. I live in a small rented room where sunlight arrives late and stays only for a few hours. I’m over the age limit for becoming an air hostess, but I can still fly. I can still sit in a plane, look out the window and touch a piece of the dream I once had.
For that, I just need to earn, save, and keep a little hope alive.
