The Tsunami of Autonomy Begins Tomorrow

The US is a mere 24 hours away from experiencing the beginning of what will be a major shift in transportation. However, you won’t hear much about it in the mainstream media—that is, unless it fails miserably.

Tesla Cybercab is the company's first purpose-built two seat electric robotaxi designed from the ground up for unsupervised autonomous operation in Tesla’s Robotaxi network. Tesla has self-certified the Cybercab as achieving Level 4 autonomy in Texas. That is the company’s official position, not an independent federal or third-party certification. The vehicle is rumored to be running an advanced version of Full Self Driving that isn't yet available to the public.

The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals and will likely be available for purchase for around $30k (US) in 2027. Tomorrow Tesla will be rolling-out their Cybercab for the first time in Austin, Texas and then Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa will be soon to follow.

I caught a glimpse of this vehicle first-hand while in Austin last November for Tesla’s shareholder meeting and was impressed by how well engineered the those earlier test-vehicles already were.

As I was looking at (more like ogling) the test vehicles there on that scorchingly hot day last November I couldn't help but think how ubiquitous this cars will become. Aesthetically the Cybercab is absolutely beautiful and actually looks like what I envision the future should look like. As I ogled, I daydreamed about how nice it would be to own one myself. I have to admit it would be nice to have one of these little golden beauties shuttling us around the city as we run our errands and go to appointments. The car could even drop us off at the airport, drive itself home, then pick us up when our trip is over.

There are several other companies in the US working on launching similar vehicles (the closest equivalent being Amazon's Zoox) but I believe Tesla has enough of a head start that they'll be the first to offer this kind of autonomy on a large scale. Once the Cybercab production-line is fully ramped up the goal is to have one vehicle rolling off the assembly line every ten seconds.

My prediction is these will be as common in major cities as Yellow Cabs used to be. It's going to be very interesting to witness tomorrow's rollout in Austin and see how the company can expand the Robotaxi network throughout the next twelve months. I think the technology is there at this point. I think Tesla's only hurdles will be of a regulatory nature.

Here Are Some Facts About Cybercab

  • Unveiled as a concept in October 2024; first production unit rolled off the line at Gigafactory Texas in February 2026, with continuous production starting around April 2026.
  • Curb weight: 3,113 lbs (1,412 kg)—Tesla’s lightest vehicle and among the lightest EVs available in the U.S.
  • Powertrain: Single front-wheel-drive AC permanent-magnet motor rated at 163 kW (219 hp); first front-wheel-drive Tesla.

  • Autonomy target: SAE Level 4 within geofenced areas using Tesla’s camera-based FSD stack. Production versions lack manual controls.
  • Additional details from Tesla documents include a 48-volt low-voltage architecture, inductive charging capability in some descriptions, and dedicated towing provisions.

Comparisons with Uber and Lyft

Tesla’s approach is vertically integrated (it designs, builds, and operates the vehicles and software). While Uber and Lyft have built platforms that match riders with human drivers (or partner AVs like Waymo) and take a commission.

  • Pricing: Tesla Robotaxi rides have been significantly cheaper in pilot markets. One analysis of tens of thousands of trips found Tesla averaging about $8 per ride in San Francisco (~$1.99/km), versus roughly double that for Lyft and higher still for Uber, with Waymo in between. Tesla has used introductory or dynamic pricing well below typical UberX/Lyft rates; long-term Cybercab economics aim far lower than the $1–$3+ per mile common today. Uber and Lyft use distance, time, demand/surge, and fees.
  • Wait times: Tesla pilots have shown longer average ETAs (~15 minutes in some data) compared with Uber, Lyft, and Waymo (often around 5 minutes).
  • Capacity and experience: Cybercab is limited to two passengers. Uber and Lyft offer 4+ seats in most products plus options like XL or premium. There is no human driver and no tipping expected in Tesla/Waymo robotaxis. Tesla uses its own app; Uber and Lyft have far larger existing user bases.
  • Availability and scale: Uber and Lyft operate nationwide with human drivers. Tesla Robotaxi (and soon Cybercab) is currently limited to specific geofenced cities and still ramping unsupervised operation. Waymo is more mature in a handful of cities and partners with Uber in some markets.
  • Business model implications: Removing the human driver eliminates a large share of Uber/Lyft’s cost structure (driver payouts are typically 50–70% of fares). A low-cost purpose-built vehicle like Cybercab could theoretically undercut traditional ride-hailing on price at scale, though Tesla still faces regulatory, safety-validation, and fleet-utilization hurdles. Uber has diversified into AV partnerships and other services; Lyft is more concentrated on ride-hailing.

    I like the vehicle and the technology but taking into consideration AI and the myriad of personal devices that enhance self-sufficiency it makes me wary of going into a world where we don't really need anybody and may end up like Greta Garbo (I like to be alone). I like relating to another human and prefer that to self-checkout - but I may be in the minority...yeah, I probably am.

    I think autonomous taxis could change urban transportation quite significantly, particularly if they can really bring the cost of rides down.

    Well depends on how quick the city and people are to implement it.

    I feel it'll probably be a mix of human and automatic taxis.

    The switch to fully autonomous transportation is still some years to come....

    This cool, but will the production vehicle have those funky doors? They don't seem very practical.

    Also, it is a strange choice to go with a two seater, hopefully next taxi will offer 4+

    Is there going to be a special app for it? Maybe when I am down in Austin in October we will be able to take one from our Air BnB to somewhere. I'm also curious, do they have seatbelts? Traditional cabs don't really require them, but do these have some kind of system in place where it doesn't start until you click in and the circuit is closed for the sensor or something like that? Also, is the idea that companies would buy these in fleets or individuals would buy them to just be another source of income for them?
