As I see, Netflix likes to list older movies as well, from time to time, especially from 2000 and around, as there are from after WW2 too, but those are a different category. I like to watch those from the 2000's as they are different, or should I say more normal than what we get nowadays?
When I saw After The Sunset with four big names, I knew I'm going to watch it. Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle's name is a guarantee in itself so I know new it's going to be good.
Having already in their possession two of the rare Napoleon Diamonds, the masterful jewel thief, Max Burdett, and his seductive partner-in-crime, Lola Cirillo, decide to retire in the sun-kissed Bahamas. However--bent on keeping the precious third and last Napoleon diamond out of Max's clutches--the maladroit FBI agent, Stan Lloyd, follows them to the tropical haven, convinced that the intrepid duo is planning the next heist: stealing the last fabulous gem being displayed on the island. But, is this truly Max and Lola's intention? Above all--after a successful and lucrative career in crime--how hard can it be to resist the temptation of one more job?
The movie starts with FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson) transporting a diamond with the necessary security measures in place for such a valuable transport, while other members of the bureau are watching a well known thief, Max Burdett (Pierce Brosnan) at a baseball game. The good thing is, the action picks up pretty quickly and in the first 10 minutes you get quite an interesting situation, that gives you a taste of what you're going to see in the rest of the movie.
After carrying out the operation against FBI agent Stan Lloyd, Max and Lola retire to the Bahamas and are enjoying their quiet life, by meeting new people at clubs, occasionally stealing their valuables, doing sports and so on. It really seems like they are completely retired from their old jobs, till word gets out that the third and last Napoleon diamond is going to show up close to the island. Agent Stan Lloyd shows up on the island as well, as he is in neck deep sh*t, I mean trouble with the bureau and needs a big win in order to get his reputation and career back on track.
Max swears to Lola, that their vacation is not a cover to prepare a new heist, and that he has no intention to steal it. That's exactly what he tells Stan too. The two are playing a cat and mouse game, racing each other towards their goal.
Basically the movie brings nothing new, we've seen several such movies before, not one, not two, but what makes it different for me is the filming location, the good humor and the good acting. I hate to say it, but the comedy industry in Hollywood took a wrong turn years ago and the new movies you see are unwatchable. This movie was made before the turn, which is why it's still quality.
Life in the Bahamas is sold as living in Paradise, so what you see here brings that vibe and it's enjoyable. The acting is also what you'd expect from such big names and I can assure you, they don't disappoint.
It's a nice distraction if you're looking to forget about life and relax, for 100 minutes.
Last, but not least, Naomie Harris is a nice addition, playing a young local cop and bringing you the local accent, at least that's what they want you to believe. I've never been to the Bahamas, so I wouldn't know if it's authentic or not, so I'm taking their word for it.
