Food Porn And Other Funny Stories

Here I am with another food porn post as I promised to someone in a comment, just don't ask me who it was as I can't remember it anymore. This was in September, when I knew I'm going to have some events to celebrate and that I'll have the opportunity to take some more food photos.

On Sunday we celebrated another birthday of one of my relatives and were invited to the restaurant. It was a really interesting day from every point of view and I wrote about it this week twice already. One post was about the lovely horses we met at the venue, and the other was an incident at the restaurant that you should read about in the linked post as I'm not going to cover it again in this post as today's fun is dedicated to the menu and other hilarious stories.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the menu was kind of "light", compared to what you get in this area of the world. Offering four types of soups, two of which are bean soups is not exactly showering visitors with options, but it was still ok. Or should I say it could have been worse?

This was a bean soup with smoked pork hock and onion. At first it was tempting as I can't even remember when I last had bean soup, but then I came to my senses and ordered something else as this soup is too "heavy" for me. I was told it was really good, but I'm not going to torture my stomach.

This was a bean soup without meat, with sour cream and hot pepper. It was ok as well I was told.

This was my soup, which was Chicken Soup à la Grecque, with sour cream and hot pepper. Hot pepper you can have it as I don't like it, but the rest is my favorite. This is a soup I could eat all day and they knew how to cook it as it was delicious.

This was wild zander fillet with rice and zucchini. Odd choice to serve fish with rice for me, but I know it's a classic combination for anyone else. There was a complaint here as the fish was kind of raw, totally unacceptable by the way.

Due to the limited options, I went for the polenta and Hungarian-style chicken paprikash (stew) with bone-in chicken legs. I've been meaning to cook paprikás at home, but somehow I never found the right time, so this was my occasion. The funny thing is, I judge the dishes I cook at home very harshly, so they better do it right, but this was really delicious. I made an attempt to swap polenta with mashed potatoes but failed.

This was slow-cooked pork neck, mashed potatoes, zucchini, mustard sauce.

Even though I was full from the soup and main course, this dessert can never be missing from my order. This is what it was called on the menu: the ever-present—and therefore famous—Dracula dessert portion: Papanași, kneaded fresh and with love.

For those of you not familiar with the dish, here it is:

Papanași is a Romanian dessert made from fresh-cheese (brânza proaspătă or urdă) dough. It is usually served topped with cream (smântână) and fruit confit. It is traditional desert in Romania and Moldova.

It's famous in the whole country, so if you're visiting, don't miss to taste it. Would be a huge mistake.

No matter how big my appetite was, my stomach was the same size as the day before and obviously could not eat it. I gave one to someone else from the start and took home 3/4 of my portion in a box, which was still a good deal.

Because it is deep fried and has God knows how many calories (I don't even want to know), I don't make it at home, but have it occasionally at the restaurant, which is two or max three times, if I'm lucky.

Ok, so this was the food porn part, now let's have some fun, shall we?

We were having lunch inside, but there were two terraces nicely arranged as well. At some point we noticed several cats roaming around the terrace, which was a bit odd.

This is a big estate, with several buildings with accommodation, stables, a small zoo, indoor riding arena, you name it, so cats roaming around is normal, but the restaurant and the serving area should be off limits to them. Easy to say as the smell attracts them and most likely clients are feeding them too, especially cat lovers.

We were just about to pay the bill and leave, when this beauty (for me), beast (for others) showed up between tables. It was quite funny to see him, or her roaming around the tables. I don't know who's dog it was, he was quite calm and gentle, he didn't wheedle anyone into giving him food, like other dogs do aggressively.

The funny thing was that most of the customers were amused by the dog as who wouldn't like such a big cuteness, but the lady on the photos was literally terrified. The expression on her face is fear.

At some point she stood up to leave, but the waiter stepped in and chased this beauty away. For us it was quite funny, not so much for the lady as it was clearly visible she was scared to death.

I wanted to ask the waiter who's dog was it, but he was tied up serving customers, so this detail remains a mystery.

It was fun to watch these animals roaming around, but if health services are notified, I'm not sure the company can get out of it without a fine. I know there are countries where pets are allowed in these places, but my country is not one of them or this place is definitely not one of those.

All in all, with all the funny happenings, it was a great day, one to remember.
