Every morning, we wake up and open our eyes without giving a second thought. People see the sunlight through the windows, recognize familiar faces, even read a message or look on their phone. People also find their way through heavy traffics and crowded streets. We call all this Normal.

Until one day, their vision becomes blur. Simple staircase becomes frightening. Familiar roads he used to walk becomes unfamiliar. Sometimes people understand the value of vision only when the world begins to disappear. This is the time we should appreciate and realize the fact :
Sight is not simply the ability to see. It is the ability to participate in the ongoing world
Today on October 8 World Sight Day, perhaps the most important thing we can do is simple stop, look and realize how much there is to see. Talking as an Ophthalmologist, vision is not only 6/6. Patient should has a good visual function which includes contrast, colour vision, peripheral vision, glare and depth perception. My first publication on Visual Function -

Making a Play card for Rally
I have spent some years looking into people's eyes. I examine the cornea, take eye pressure, check the lens for any cataract and study retina if any small changes has threaten the vision. I am still learning to recognize the disease before it becomes obvious and treat the problems before they become irreversible. Sometimes, the best and important part of saving the sight happens outside the examination room.

Awareness rally on the streets
This year we took eye care beyond the walls of hospital and into the streets and community. As a part of campaign, we organized awarness rally carrying the banners and playcards with message about importance of regular eye examinations and preventing avoidable blindness We provided free eye screening and free cataract surgery to patients as the part of World Sight Day campaign on Taulihawa,Lumbini,Nepal. We just didn't celebrated the day but also helped people to see it better.

Paradox Of Ophthalmology
Somewhere, patient having cataract which is simply treatable is living with poor vision because they cannot afford surgery. Another patient having high blood sugar doesn't know that their retina is having diabetic changes and need regular examination. Some patient having glaucoma comes for checkup when their vision has already deteriorated and irreversible. Child struggles school for years because no one thought that his vision is poor and need glasses.
Coming to point, technology may be available. Treatment may exist and surgery also may be ready. But access, awareness, affordabiity and follow up determine whether that treatment has reached the patient or not. For me on World Sight day, vision is not only about what happens under the microscope or behind the slit lamp, saving sight begins with simply listening.
