Here I’m trying to vent and capture this raw, real, and bleak side of daily life that I’m experiencing, just like so many other Venezuelans.

No sleep, no dreams, and no respite: surviving work amid the heat and power outages is horrible; I feel like life is slipping through my fingers amid the exhaustion and the frustrating days.

Getting back into the work routine always takes some adjusting, but returning to an office that, incidentally, has no air conditioning—in the midst of a worrying heat wave, in such a sweltering environment, during such dreadful hours—is an ordeal I have to endure day after day alongside my coworkers, leaving there and walking what feels like endless blocks to wait for a crowded bus under the merciless sun, leaving with very few bus tickets because my salary doesn’t go very far, and with an empty stomach because without electricity I can’t cook—and since gas doesn’t reach my neighborhood either—honestly and from the bottom of my heart, it’s a daily test of endurance.

If you add to that the fact that getting a good night’s sleep has become almost impossible, the challenge is twofold. The six-hour-on, six-hour-off power rationing is robbing us of much more than physical rest: it’s destroying our sleep, our peace, and our patience. Spending the night tossing and turning in bed, searching for a breath of cool air that never comes, makes the alarm going off in the morning feel like a sentence.

Arriving at the office in that state of mental exhaustion and having to perform, concentrate, and smile as if everything were fine is three times as draining. My mind goes foggy, my patience runs out quickly, and I spend the day feeling irritable.

I’m writing this because I know I’m not the only one going through the same thing, and because this blog is also my space to vent about what hurts and wears me down in real life.

Surviving the heat and forced insomnia while trying to fulfill our responsibilities isn’t easy. To those of us trying to give 100% with our mental battery at 5%, here’s a hug of empathy. We’ll keep trying—let’s not give up, and let’s not get used to it either—but let’s not let anything rob us of our happiness and strength. Let’s get up with a little enthusiasm and try to do the best we can—for our children, for our colleagues, because we’re all in the same situation, and maybe we can offer a little help to others who don’t know how to cope. Stay strong.
