When I watched Oppenheimer I thought a great deal about the connection between knowledge, power, and responsibility. In my view, this film is not only the story of a scientist who contributed to the creation of the atomic bomb, but also a narrative that shows how a single decision can change the world while raising questions to which there are no simple answers. I believe that knowledge represents immense power, but that its true value cannot be assessed without considering how it is used and the consequences that result from it.

For example, when Oppenheimer and his team were working on the Manhattan Project, their goal was to develop a weapon before Nazi Germany could. I understand why this mission seemed urgent and essential to them at the time. However, once the project was completed and the atomic bomb was created, the question became much more important than mere scientific achievement: Are we capable of creating something without fully understanding the consequences that creation might have on the world? In my view, this is one of the most important reflections this film has inspired in me.
I’ve also thought a lot about the Trinity test, during which the first atomic bomb was tested. This event represents a tremendous scientific achievement, but it also carries with it a certain sense of unease about the power that humankind has just created. I think people sometimes focus so much on achieving their goals that they don’t take enough time to think about what will happen once those goals are achieved. Oppenheimer and his team succeeded in the mission entrusted to them, but that success ushered in a new era in which the world lives in fear of nuclear weapons.
Another striking example is the way the film depicts the use of atomic bombs against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as Oppenheimer’s reaction to the consequences of his work. That was when I felt the difference between a scientific achievement and an accomplishment whose consequences are difficult to accept on a human level. In my view, this reinforces the idea that a technical achievement does not necessarily mean a moral one. When an invention has the potential to upend the lives of millions of people, the responsibility that comes with it cannot be reduced to the mere question of who came up with the idea or who carried it out.
I also noticed that the film shows how a person can be admired when they are useful to a government or a powerful system, and then become a suspect and face pressure when the situation changes. For example, the security hearings Oppenheimer underwent show how his past relationships and political views were used to call his loyalty into question. This led me to reflect on how people are sometimes judged based on what they can offer those in power, rather than on a fair assessment of their character and body of work.
On the other hand, the relationship between Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss showed me how personal conflicts, politics, and individual ambitions can influence one’s perception of the truth. I believe that a successful person is not always immune to jealousy, suspicion, or pressure, especially when operating in an environment where political interests and power struggles intertwine. The film thus shows that the hardest battle is not always the one fought on the outside, but that it can also involve reputation, trust, and the power to determine how a person will be remembered in history.
Ultimately, what I take away from Oppenheimer is that human beings should not take pride solely in what they are capable of achieving, but should also reflect on the reasons that drive them to act and on the people whose lives their decisions may affect. Oppenheimer played a part in a historic scientific breakthrough, but his story reminds us that certain advances come with responsibilities that are difficult to escape. In my view, knowledge can be a source of power, but true wisdom lies in understanding how to use that power and knowing when it is necessary to question its consequences. That is why I see this film as a work that is not only about science, but also about moral conscience, power, and the weight of human decisions.
