Wednesday Walk

Wednesday Walk : Fortaleza de Sagres, Lagos (Portugal)

For this #WednesdayWalk organized by @tattoodjay, we are still in the very beautiful Algarve region of Portugal, but this time we are going to visit the Fortress of Sagres, a point of land surrounded by three cliffs and a wall. Nature has done most of the work for this impressive military fortification.

We arrived around 4:30 p.m. at the Sagres Fortress, it closed an hour later. This would have deserved at least 1 additional hour to better enjoy this place. Because this promontory which flows into the sea is quite vast and the different buildings are spaced apart. The front door of the fortress was under repair, I think, just for painting. Salt and wind must quickly damage the buildings.

So there will be no photo of the front door 😀. As soon as we pass the ticket office, we find ourselves in front of the rare buildings of the promontory including the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Church of Our Lady of Grace) as well as a small museum (already closed upon our arrival). We went for a walk along the cliff that protects this structure.

For history, the fort was built around 1450 under the order of Infant Henry the Navigator who lived there until his death. It was the central point for Portuguese maritime expeditions. Another part of history that I'm unfamiliar with, but always interesting to learn on vacation.

The cliff is truly impressive, 60 meters high. It offers perfect protection. Given the passage of time and the elements, there is not much left on this rocky plateau. I wonder if there was a model in the museum that showed the place at the time of Henry the Navigator. Nothing found online 😢.

At the end of the promontory, there is the Sagres lighthouse but it is very alone. Nature has reclaimed its rights. There are a few signs along the way mentioning the flora and fauna that live here. Given the strength of the wind, there is not much growing, or it remains at ground level. On the other hand, there are quite a few birds. I tried to take pictures of some, but only blurry black dots in the middle of the blue sky 😀. They're too quick for me and my camera.

A Voz do Mar

Next to the lighthouse there is a labyrinth, a work of art called A Voz do Mar, The Voice of the Sea installed in 2010. The structure is located above a fault in the cliff and in its center the sound of the waves and the ocean is amplified. You can see in the next photo that the entrance is far away...

It's very pleasant to walk along the cliff to admire the landscape of the town of Sagres and its beach Praia da Mareta. On the other hand, the wind blows all the time and quite strongly. When he has his back, it's okay but from the front, it's difficult to move forward 😀.

This is still a place to do if you are in the area. Nature is super beautiful and the place is full of history. But I advise you to arrive a little earlier than I did. the Fortress of Sagres deserves to take your time to fully appreciate all its charms.

On the way out, we went to eat ice cream at Alice Gelateria (very good) while walking in the center of Sagres. I hope you enjoyed this #WednesdayWalk with me. Enjoy your day.

    Good evening, my friend!

I've been there many years ago... to be precise in September 6, 2008! It is not as near has I wish... but luckily I can have the opportunity to visit it again in a "short" trip by car... about 4 hour long drive... Or maybe by train, that could take a couple more hours, but saves a lot of cash!

So lovely to notice that you found that true gem of Portugal. One of the finest!

Here is the link of the photos that I took then

Have a great week, my friend, and thank you for making me remember such great times that I've passed many years ago.
