The Final Problem is a new Netflix series released in September of this year. Consisting of just four episodes, it is an adaptation of a literary work by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. The story begins in a hotel in Mallorca in 1959, where a group of strangers and an unexpected murder set the intrigue in motion.
It is a very short series—I don’t think I’ve seen one like it in a long time—but that works well; the plot is straightforward and didn’t need to be stretched out any further. The production design evokes that classic era, featuring elegant dresses and suits, a hotel that blends the modern with the old, and fragile, enigmatic characters—starting with the story’s protagonist.

The Final Problem
This story follows Benjamín Basil (José Coronado), a mature, retired actor who once achieved fame for playing the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes on screen. He is a serious man with an inquisitive gaze—always eager to learn more, just like any good detective. The plot kicks off when he arrives at an old hotel—run by Ausländer (Maribel Verdú)—on an island, accompanied by an old friend (a film director), just as an impending storm rolls in.
Trapped alongside other guests—including a young writer, a German couple, and several tourists—the group faces tragedy when Elisa Mander, one of the tourists, is found dead in a room locked from the inside. While everything points to suicide, Basil remains unconvinced; he manages to prove that it was actually a murder. Driven by circumstance, he is forced to draw upon the knowledge he gained from his past role as a detective to uncover the killer.
The premise is undeniably compelling—after the first episode, I was hooked. I’ll admit the pacing is a bit slow, and some scenes feel rather weak—at times, the attempt to pay homage to the classic mystery genre veers dangerously close to unintentional parody. Even so, the story manages to draw you in and keep you curious. As for the ending—well, haha, it wasn’t what I expected! It wasn’t necessarily bad, though perhaps a bit simple and predictable.
In any case, I encourage you to watch it and form your own opinion. It’s a great series for passing the time—perfect for a weekend watch.😃
