🎨 A Cultural Perspective: Patriotic Symbols and Identity in a Nica-Panamanian Mural

Hello, StreetArt community! How are you doing?

Today I’m sharing a mural I found at a spot where I enjoy eating Nicaraguan food with my family.

I'm Nicaraguan, but I'm currently living in Panama.

Sharing my thoughts on this mural will be truly special because, being from Nicaragua, I can clearly explain what each element represents.

At first glance, what do you think this mural is trying to convey?

🇳🇮 Elements and Symbols of Nicaraguan Culture

Analyzing the mural, it features several artistic elements from Nicaraguan culture:

  • 💬 The Phrase "Soy Nica": First, you can see the phrase "Soy Nica" (I'm Nica), which is a very common expression in Nicaragua.

It's what Nicaraguans say when asked where they're from, though it's also used depending on the context of the conversation.

  • 🌋 Flag, Shield, Volcano, and Flower: If you look closely, you can spot the blue and white flag along with Nicaragua's national emblem.

On the right side, there's a volcano; one of Nicaragua's key features is that it's filled with volcanoes—many of which are still active.

The yellow flower next to it is the Sacuanjoche, the national flower of Nicaragua.

  • 📜 The Poet Rubén Darío: You can also see the poet Rubén Darío, a figure every Nicaraguan knows well.

He is world-famous for his poetry and his contributions to global literature, as well as for coining the famous line: “If the homeland is small, one dreams it big.”

  • 🦜 Guardabarranco, Rum, and Granada: On the left side, there's a green bird—the Guardabarranco, Nicaragua's national bird. Virtually all of Nicaragua's national symbols are highlighted in this piece.

And of course, you'll see a bottle of Flor de Caña Rum, a famous Nicaraguan alcoholic beverage well-known both locally and internationally.

There's also a yellow castle, which immediately brings to mind the city of Granada, where they serve delicious vigorón. If you ever visit Granada, you definitely have to try it!

🇵🇦 The Connection with Panama

In the mural, you can also spot a phrase very common in Panama: "¿QUÉ XOPÁ?". Panamanians know this slang well! Another local word featured is "PRITTY" (pretty / cool).

As you can see, while the mural primarily emphasizes Nicaragua's national symbols, it also integrates elements of Panamanian culture.

In fact, you can see a boy holding the Panamanian flag next to a girl—Panamanians take great pride in their traditional attire.

🍽️ Carne Asada Nica

The spot where this mural is located is called Carne Asada Nica.

They serve authentic Nicaraguan dishes like gallopinto, sour milk, moronga (blood sausage), cheese, nacatamales, and many other delicious meals.
