Resiliencia, Solidaridad y Amor

Resilience, Solidarity, and Love
It has been 242 days since we embraced each other with joy to welcome the New Year. That night was filled with joy; many families gathered around a shared hope: to leave behind a year that had perhaps been a bit difficult, but we always held onto the hope that 2026 would dawn with the momentum we had so longed for. It’s no secret that we in Venezuela have endured difficult years, but at that moment our resilient spirit was stronger than ever.

What we didn’t know was that in early January, the sound of bombs would completely shake the nation’s capital; our house shook violently, and the sight of everything visible from the window left me practically in shock. Those were days of tension, uncertainty, and widespread turmoil, but the reality was that the economic system was once again falling apart, the inflationary spiral would begin to widen, and hopes were fading into what already seemed like a hollow year.
Months went by without any major developments, but once again putting our resilience as a society to the test, as we have to deal with economic trivialities, political changes, and a reality on the streets that is palpable. I am referring to the complexities of a country suffering a structural crisis of immense proportions, whose solutions do not lie entirely within our borders; rather, the strings that, without our realizing it, are dictating our fate are being pulled from abroad.

But then the middle of the year arrived, and with it the earth shook; our coastline would be scarred forever, the capital would be brought to its knees, and the rest of the country watched in awe as a natural anomaly unfolded—one that could be considered the exception to the rule. From the outside world, anyone following the course of Venezuela’s recent history would think this was the straw that broke the camel’s back for a people who have been battered for years, but on the contrary, despite the widespread sense of pain and sadness, a strength emerged in our hearts that we didn’t know existed. That resilience everyone talks so much about fell short of describing the collective solidarity, the love for our neighbors, and the strength we displayed in the face of such devastation.

Only two months have passed, and nature continues to rage: floods have submerged entire highways; two hurricanes have unleashed their fury on the eastern region; thunderstorms are lashing the west; and a heat index reaching 44 degrees is taking its toll on the foothills of the Andes.

Many are already speaking of a dark year, a lost year, a year marked by sadness and pain, but I dare to refute those claims. Because as a Venezuelan living in the heart of this land, I go out into the streets every day; I’ve traveled through the affected areas; I’ve spoken with those struggling economically; and I’ve looked into the eyes of my compatriots—only to discover that hope still lives on in them, the flame of resilience still burns there; there is still solidarity, love for one’s neighbor, and a desire to keep fighting.

There are still more than 100 days left until the end of the year, and everything points to things remaining very dynamic. And although it may seem right now that everything has conspired against us, the truth is that in this world of complexities, there are no privileges here; we are all at the mercy of a living planet, and at the same time, we as the human race must also accept with dignity the consequences of the disruption we have caused to our environment.

What’s truly important here is to learn from the Venezuelan example, where—despite living through the darkest of times—people always start the day with a smile, a positive attitude in the face of adversity, and the certainty that a better, much greater, and brighter future lies ahead—one in which we will not only achieve our individual goals but, as a community, will also develop and grow in positivity, joy, and absolute prosperity.
