Words come and go, as if they were spring water that never runs dry, but there are moments when they freeze; just as the Arctic lake freezes over, becoming ice so cold, so hard, so impenetrable that it prevents the liquid from flowing beneath its thick layer of silence.

And the fact is that, on many occasions, words do not serve the same purpose, especially when anguish, pessimism and fear prevent them from being fully understood. It is there, faced with the reality of fear, that silence emerges consciously; that silence which burns at the back of the throat, yearning to let the words out, yet knowing full well that they will not be the much-needed balm. And it is there that this silence learns to speak through the gaze and through the hands that hold those other hands that are suffering.

We often think that silence is a lack of ideas, when in reality it is the necessary respect for personal and collective processes. Sometimes an indiscreet word slips out without being thought through, creating conflict, or words spoken ‘in the heat of the moment’, as the saying goes, end up being the gunpowder for an unnecessary war. We come to understand, then, that refraining from speaking is not cowardice, but pure courage that observes, analyses and waits for the right moment to act—not to cause harm.

1000041059.jpg

In that inner compass that knows how to act on pure instinct, without guides or books, our deepest cardinal points are reflected:

The North of silence is the refuge of language, where the body speaks with affection and reflective focus. When the mind is overwhelmed by fear or sorrow, conscious silence is not an inability to communicate; when two people are in tune with one another, they often both fall silent, following their own north.

1000041060.jpg

The South leads us to the acceptance of winter, of that cold that chills the bones from within. We see words freeze without perceiving it as a blockage or a defeat; we know it is a natural stage that must not be forced. That frozen lake needs its own time to preserve its calm.

1000041057.jpg

The East and the West harbour the flow of empathy. Whilst the magnetic needle spins, seeking glances, hands and just the right space to give a hug, we realise that to inhabit one extreme, we must first have travelled through the others.

1000041058.jpg

For this reason, do not see silence as a defeat, a weakness or a negation of character. Silence is the safe space to accompany and allow ourselves to be accompanied, the unhurried return to the centre of that compass which, without realising it, we always carry within us.

My own compass

On many occasions my compass has broken and, out of cowardice, I have spoken when it was not necessary. One learns from one’s falls, and so I learnt… I learnt that a hand on the shoulder says ‘I understand you’, that a hug shouts ‘I support you’ and that holding hands whispers ‘everything will be alright, even if I don’t know when’. Finally, I also learnt that a steady gaze—that connection from eye to eye without looking away—is the most valuable and genuine form of support, because the eyes are the mirror of the soul and the soul never lies.

1000041056.jpg

My compass was set straight the day I realised that offering support isn’t the same as talking, that debate is for other occasions, and that to be present, I don’t need to lecture on something I don’t understand or that others won’t understand; all that’s needed is to be there, listening to whoever wants to speak or simply being present, sharing our silences.
