Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
Clarification: He is NOT Barney’s brother, but you’ll soon see why I say that. It’s Day 16 of "spooky season," and for this entry, we’re jumping to the present day—setting aside the usual classics for a moment to discuss a 2026 film that really caught my eye. Many of you have likely seen at least one episode of the Barney show, featuring the character surrounded by a bunch of children singing and dancing; well, that’s the premise of this movie—except the protagonist is Buddy, a unicorn who hides a truly sinister personality. Those kinds of shows were already unsettling and strange to begin with, and that’s exactly what this film aims to explore: how an innocent children’s program can turn into a nightmare for the kids—and even their parents. It’s a horror film infused with a bit of dark, absurd comedy—somewhat in the vein of Five Nights at Freddy’s.
This story takes place on the set of a TV show—the kind that were so common in the 90s. The show is called "It's Buddy," and it’s hosted by the unicorn I mentioned earlier. One day, while the show is underway, one of the children (Josh) refuses to do what Buddy asks; he won't play along or follow the rules. This triggers a psychotic break in our "friendly" pal, causing him to go completely berserk and turn violent. At first, it’s unclear exactly what happened, but in subsequent episodes—as the whole situation seems to repeat in an endless loop—one of the children still on the show notices traces of blood. This sets off alarm bells, and they begin to realize that they are trapped in the world of a monster.
Faced with such a scenario, these children decide they must flee the carnage, and they pull out all the stops to make it happen. Meanwhile, in the "real" world, we meet Grace (Cristin Milioti), a mother who is suddenly gripped by a sense of fear, anguish, and terror. Desperate for answers, she senses that the situation is deeply connected to her own family—and she’s right. Before long, she finds herself entangled with Buddy’s sinister program. From this point on, the film shifts into survival mode: the children are trying to escape, while Grace searches for the answers she needs. I’ll be honest—I didn’t have high hopes for this movie, but I ended up really enjoying it. There’s something special about horror that stems from the absurd—the kind that lends itself to satire—and this film nails it. I recently reviewed "Ice Cream Man," another movie in this same vein; it follows a similar formula: child protagonists surrounded by blood, horror, and suspense, navigating a world that—while filled with very adult-oriented scenarios—is presented as "happy." It’s so "happy," in fact, that it’s both laughable and deeply unsettling.
"Absurd" is the perfect word for it—that’s exactly how it’s presented. It’s a solid comedy that plays with the idea that you never really know who’s inside the costume—a question people genuinely asked back in those days. While it doesn’t fall squarely into the slasher genre, it still features some very violent, bloody, and explicit scenes. It’s hilarious to watch Buddy’s extreme mood swings; he’s a total psychopath—he demands a hug, and if you don’t give him one, he kills you. The plot is really cool—the journey the kids go on, what they have to endure, and their ultimate fates—you certainly won’t be bored. It’s not the kind of terrifying horror movie that leaves you frozen with fear, but it’s highly enjoyable precisely because of how "absurd" it is. The moments involving the mother, Grace, when she discovers what’s going on—those are the film’s high points, and arguably its best parts. It might sound hard to believe, but it’s a genuinely good horror film—a dark satire.
As for the performances, seeing children portray fear and terror almost always works well; the dedication they bring to their roles and scenes is truly impressive. The entire lead cast does a solid, commendable job, making the film very easy to watch—having Cristin Milioti and Topher Grace in the lead roles certainly helps, too. Buddy is voiced by Keegan-Michael Key, a comedian who is, naturally, incredibly funny. Much of the humor stems from the way Buddy speaks and expresses himself; he’s a truly eccentric character. Honestly, I didn’t have high expectations for this film, but it turned out to be quite a surprise. Personally, I enjoy this genre—the blend of horror and dark comedy. It has some great scenes, a strong ending, plenty of violence, and plenty of laughs; it’s got just about everything. It runs for an hour and a half. Highly recommended—it’s a unique film. I’ve included the trailer here.
Dura hora y media. Muy recomendada, es una película distinta. Les dejo el tráiler por acá.
Alright folks, that’s all for today—I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
