Tuesday the 13th—historically known as an unlucky day—won't stop us from continuing our mission to discuss the must-watch horror movies of this spooky season. Today, we’re looking at a film very different from yesterday’s pick: while The Witch offers a slow-burning, atmospheric kind of horror, The Autopsy of Jane Doe (also known simply as The Autopsy) delivers the kind of unsettling paranormal terror that feels like it’s about to leap right out of the screen. I’d often seen this movie on "must-watch" lists for the genre, and now I clearly understand why. Beyond its strong supernatural elements, the film also dabbles—albeit lightly—in body horror, which makes sense given that a corpse lies at the heart of the story. So, keep that in mind if you’re sensitive to the sight of blood or anything of that nature.

"Jane Doe"—for those who may not know—is the legal term used in the United States to identify an unidentified woman. With this in mind, the film opens with a Jane Doe found at a crime scene. It is a multiple-victim crime shrouded in mystery, defying standard explanations and marked by an extreme level of violence within the house. To uncover what happened, the woman's body is taken to the local morgue, run by the father-and-son team of Tommy and Austin Tilden—a family business spanning generations. Little do they know that this corpse will bring far more questions and unsettling concerns than answers.

As the two forensic examiners begin to inspect Jane Doe's body, they realize that what they are seeing defies all medical logic. The woman's body is pristine—flawless and free of external marks or wounds—yet her internal state is a total disaster, with every organ severely damaged. The deeper they dig, the more they uncover, eventually stumbling upon the key to the mystery—though revealing that would be a spoiler, so you will have to watch the movie yourself. From this point on, things take a turn for the worse; the body isn't entirely dead, and something is triggering paranormal activity in the facility, turning the father and son's night into a living hell. Clearly, the film shifts gears here, plunging into the realm of supernatural horror where the inexplicable takes center stage. It all stems from curses, rituals, or spells—whatever you choose to call them—because, naturally, crossing that threshold opens doors that are nearly impossible to close.

Visually, the film has some interesting suspenseful elements; there are scenes heavy with the uncertainty of what is in the morgue with these two people—since they clearly aren't alone—making the viewing experience quite unsettling. As someone who rarely gets scared (it usually takes something truly unexpected), I didn't find this film particularly frightening, though I can see how others might easily be spooked by it. The real draw here is the mounting dread felt with every passing minute; as the night wears on, the atmosphere becomes increasingly heavy, dangerous, and unpredictable. The plot is very simple; while it’s cool to discover what is actually going on, the revelation isn't exactly shocking—it’s interesting, but nothing more. When I mention "body horror," I’m referring to the presence of blood and the physical manipulation of the body—even in a medical context. It’s a different kind of gore.

The film succeeds thanks to the atmosphere built around Jane Doe's corpse and the unfolding paranormal events, rather than the performances. It’s not that the acting is bad, but rather that it lacks weight and adds nothing of substance to the plot. The two leads do their jobs—nothing more, nothing less—without delivering anything memorable or epic. I liked the ending because it avoids the typical resolution; the plot is left somewhat open-ended, implying that some things simply cannot be explained or resolved. All in all, it is a well-crafted film where the paranormal elements work flawlessly. There is tension, suspense, and dread—everything needed to make the story enjoyable. I’m not sure if I’d call it a modern classic—it came out in 2016—but it is certainly decent and worth watching. So yes, I recommend it to everyone. It runs for less than an hour and a half, which surprised me. Here is the trailer so you can get a feel for it.
