It is the eleventh day of October, and we are aiming to catch up on some of the great horror movies out there. Demián Rugna is an Argentine director who made a name for himself with When Evil Lurks—which we discussed a few days ago—and with the film we are looking at today, Terrified (Aterrados). Many might think that quality work isn't produced on this side of the pond, but that simply isn't the case; Rugna’s work is spectacular, with each film surpassing the last. What stands out most to me is how he manifests horror; in both films, he reveals the rawest, most chilling aspects of a paranormal experience. This particular movie delivers pure supernatural horror, featuring elements that are hard to describe—nuances you’d only really grasp if you’ve seen Stranger Things, for instance.
Onceavo día de este octubre con la meta de tratar de ponernos al día con algunas de las grandes películas de terror que hay por ahí. Demián Rugna es un director argentino que se dio a conocer con "Cuando acecha la maldad", de la que hablamos hace unos días y con este film de hoy, Aterrados. Muchos pensarán que en este lado del charco no se hacen cosas de calidad pero la verdad es que no es así, el trabajo de Rugna es espectacular siendo un film mejor que el otro. Creo que de las cosas que destaco de él es la forma en como manifiesta el terror, en ambas películas muestra el lado más crudo y escalofriante de lo que puede ser una experiencia paranormal. En esta película en particular estamos ante un horror netamente sobrenatural con unas pinceladas difíciles de explicar y que solo lo entenderás si viste Stranger Things, por poner un ejemplo.
The story is set in a typical Buenos Aires neighborhood where strange events have begun to unfold. It is a quiet area where everyone knows one another, yet it is now plagued by truly inexplicable phenomena—ranging from odd noises in the pipes and within the walls and objects moving on their own, to the worst incident of all: the violent death of a woman under circumstances that defy all logic. A series of deaths begins to occur, but the most disturbing aspect is not the fatalities themselves, but the events that follow them; a child rising from his grave four days after burial is a prime example. To solve this mystery, the local police commissioner summons a group of experts he believes can help decipher what is truly going on.
Nos ubicamos en un barrio típico de Buenos Aires en donde están comenzando a pasar cosas extrañas. Es un sitio tranquilo en donde todos se conocen pero que está siendo atormentado por fenómenos que son realmente inexplicables. Si, hablamos de ruidos raros dentro de las tuberías en las casas, entre las paredes, objetos que se mueven de lugar solos, hasta lo peor que terminó siendo la muerte de una mujer en unas circunstancias muy violentas y que desafían toda lógica. Son varias las muertes que se comienzan a dar pero lo peor no es eso sino las cosas que suceden después entorno a dichas muertes, que un niño salga de su tumba 4 días después es un ejemplo claro de esto. Para resolver este misterio el comisario del lugar convoca a una serie de expertos que él cree que pueden ayudar a descifrar que es lo que verdaderamente pasa.
The experts in question are a retired police commissioner—who is surprisingly open-minded regarding these cases—a forensic doctor specializing in the paranormal, and an American specialist. Once assembled, the trio ventures into the affected homes—there are several of them—to piece together the clues and unravel the mystery plaguing the neighborhood. What they encounter is essentially pure terror: paranormal activity that is complex, deeply frightening, and—above all—dangerous; as they discover, violence is an ever-present threat. This film is an excellent example of horror at its most intense; Demián Rugna successfully immerses the viewer in the story through masterfully crafted scenes, utilizing subtle scares that stop short of cheap jump scares yet keep you constantly on edge. He handles suspense brilliantly, gradually revealing events in fragments to ensure the intrigue takes hold—a recurring technique of his, as seen in When Evil Lurks.
Estos expertos vienen siendo un comisario retirado quien sorprendentemente tiene la mente bastante abierta en relación a estos casos, una doctora forense especializada en lo paranormal y un especialista americano. Una vez reunidos los tres se adentrarán en las casas afectadas, porque son varias, para tratar de unir cabos y dar con el misterio que azota al barrio. Lo que encuentran es básicamente el terror puro, es una actividad paranormal compleja de explicar, sumamente aterradora y sobretodo peligrosa y es como verán la violencia siempre estará presente. Esta película es una muestra muy buena de la representación del horror en máxima expresión, Demián Rugna logra meter de lleno al espectador a la historia con escenas muy bien logradas, con esos micro sustos que no llegan al jumpscare pero que te ponen alerta. El suspenso es algo que maneja muy bien, poco a poco te presenta lo que está pasando y te lo muestra por pedazos como para que la intriga haga si efecto; esto es una constante en él porque en "Cuando acecha la maldad" pasa lo mismo.
The scenes—and not just the suspenseful ones—are clearly spectacular. It is a very graphic kind of horror, too; I realized that this director is highly visual—he shows you exactly what he wants to show without holding anything back. There is violence and gore, including a couple of truly explicit and bizarre deaths, all accompanied by classic horror elements like ghostly figures and typical poltergeist activity. However, the plot and the underlying premise didn't quite hook me. The film’s execution is top-notch, but I’m not sure the substance ultimately won me over. While there are supernatural phenomena, there is something deeper at play—it’s not all that simple. Even when you grasp what is happening, you’re left feeling unsettled because certain events defy the internal logic of the plot; that sense of mystery is what stuck with me. There is no chance of getting bored; it’s a suspenseful film where things are constantly happening.
Evidentemente las escenas, no solo las de suspenso, son espectaculares. Es un terror muy gráfico también, algo que me di cuenta es que este director es muy visual, lo que te quiere mostrar lo va hacer sin tapujos. Hay violencia, sangre, hay par de muertes bien explicitas y bizarras; todo esto acompañado con la esencia clásica del terror, figuras fantasmales, los típicos poltergeist. La trama, el trasfondo, si es algo que no me enganchó del todo. La forma del film es top pero el fondo es algo que al final no se si me terminó convenciendo. Por lo que si, tenemos fenómenos sobrenaturales pero hay algo más profundo, no todo es tan sencillo como eso. Cuando entiendes lo que pasa igual te quedas desconcertado porque hay cosas que según la lógica de la trama no tendría sentido que pasen, con ese misterio es con lo que me quedo. No hay manera de aburrirse, es un suspenso en el que siempre están pasando cosas.
The performances are solid, all very much in tune with the characters' experiences. While no single performance truly steals the show, the cast generally delivers restrained, grounded portrayals. A couple of actors do stand out slightly due to the sheer level of terror they endure; their lives turn into a nightmare, and living in constant fear that something evil is lurking—even inside their own homes—is an exhausting ordeal. The ending is effective because it defies expectations—a trait shared with this director's other film. It isn't necessarily a "twist" so much as a different way to conclude the story; faced with two paths, the director chooses the less conventional, less predictable one. Personally, I preferred Cuando acecha la maldad, though that doesn't mean this film is bad—quite the opposite; it’s a great movie. It delivers intense horror and suspense from start to finish, featuring graphic elements and excellent use of the paranormal. Highly recommended; it has a runtime of an hour and a half. Las actuaciones están muy bien, todas muy acordes a lo que están viviendo. No hay algo que destaque realmente pero en líneas generales todos los actores estuvieron muy sobrios interpretando sus papeles. Puede ser que un par de ellos sobresalgan un poco por el nivel de terror que experimentan, sus vidas terminan siendo una pesadilla por lo que vivir con el constante temor de que algo malo está cerca, incluso dentro de sus casas, es algo agotador. El final si estuvo bueno porque se aleja de lo esperado, algo que también coincide en con la otra película de este director. No es que sea sorpresivo sino que simplemente es otra forma de terminar la historia, creo que hay dos caminos, pues él escoge el menos convencional y común. En fin, si me preguntan creo que a mi me gustó más "Cuando acecha la maldad", esto no quiere decir que esta sea mala, todo lo contrario, es una gran película. Tiene un terror bien marcado, un suspenso de principio a fin, gráfica y buen uso del elemento paranormal. Muy recomendada, dura hora y media.
