One of the great ills plaguing Latin America (and the world), besides the sheer number of criminals, is that the police forces—those who should be protecting society—can be even worse than the criminals themselves. I say this because the capture of El Chapo Guzmán was the most compelling demonstration that there are still police officers determined to do their job without succumbing to corruption or easy money. This isn't just another sepia-toned film about hitmen, the kind Hollywood uses to portray Latin America; it's a chronicle of the hours leading up to the third capture of perhaps one of the most dangerous and wanted drug traffickers in the world. Yet another example of the continued quality of Mexican cinema.
Uno de los grandes males que tiene Latinoamérica (y el mundo), además de la gran cantidad de criminales que hay es que las fuerzas policiales, esas que se deberían de encargar de proteger a la sociedad, pueden ser hasta peores que los mismos delincuentes. Esto lo digo porque cuando capturaron a El Chapo Guzmán fue la demostración más fehaciente de que todavía hay policías decididos a hacer su trabajo sin la necesidad de caer en la corrupción o en el dinero fácil. Esta no es otra película más sobre sicarios con tonos sepia, esos que son usados por Hollywood para denotar tierras latinas, es la crónica de como fueron las horas previas a la tercera captura del quizás uno de los narcotraficantes más peligrosos y solicitados del mundo. Una muestra más de que el cine mexicano sigue siendo de calidad.
This story centers on two federal police officers who, while on patrol, came across the car that El Chapo and his head of security had stolen after an operation to capture them. This was back in 2016 in the state of Sinaloa, the home of the Sinaloa Cartel. These officers were like any other, people with personal problems, but who still went out to do their jobs and ultimately refused to be intimidated by such a terribly powerful figure as El Chapo. Imagine stopping a stolen vehicle and finding the devil himself inside; that's the kind of fear people in the surrounding area lived with.
Esta historia se centra en los dos policías federales, que estando dentro de su turno de patrullaje, se encontraron con el carro que, el Chapo junto con su jefe seguridad, habían robado después de un operativo que buscaba capturarlos. Esto es por allá en el 2016 en el estado de Sinaloa, lugar de donde era o es el Cartel de Sinaloa. Estos policías eran como cualquier otro, personas con problemas en su vida personal pero que aún así salían a cumplir con su trabajo y que al final no se dejaron intimidar por una figura tan terriblemente poderosa como lo era el Chapo. Imaginen detener a un vehículo robado y que dentro de él estuviera el mismísimo diablo; con ese miedo vivía la gente en las cercanías.
As I mentioned, this story focuses on the hours leading up to the official capture. When I say it's a film that departs from the usual fare, from the traditional, it's because it shows us the tension and fear these two agents experienced being so close to someone like Guzmán. It's not a film where action is the main focus, although there are a couple of action scenes; it's more about the drama surrounding the decisions they had to make that day. I think it's also a film that seeks to show the other side of the reality of dealing with these criminals. Usually, stories focus on the bad guys, but this is a look at the side of the law, showing, as I say in the title, that dedicated police officers still exist. All this doesn't mean the story is boring; on the contrary, I found it incredibly interesting and entertaining because films don't always take this approach.
Como dije esta trama se concentra justo en las horas antes de que se oficializara la captura. Cuando digo que es un film que se aleja de los de siempre, de lo tradicional, es porque nos muestra la tensión y el miedo que pasaron estos dos agentes estando tan cerca de una persona como Guzmán. No es un film en donde la acción se hace presente, aunque si hay un par de escenas de eso, es más bien el drama que rodea tener que tomar las decisiones que ese día se tomaron. Creo que también es una película que busca mostrar el otro lado de la realidad que supone tener que lidiar con estos criminales, generalmente las tramas involucran a los malos, acá es una mirada al lado de la ley, de como digo en el titulo, todavía existen policías dedicados. Todo esto no quiere decir que la historia sea aburrida, al contrario, la encontré super interesante y entretenida porque no siempre las películas tienen este enfoque.
You won't get bored because even though the story is well-known and real—we all know the fate of these characters—it's always fascinating to consider how it all could have unfolded. This is based on accounts, reports, and journalistic pieces, so it's very likely that fiction was used at certain points. It's important to see these things because they don't glorify these criminal groups. There's usually a lot out there that "exalts" these figures, portraying them as heroes or people who do what they do for the benefit of others; that's not the case. In fact, here we see these guys worried, weak, and insecure when they don't have power or control. We need to demystify them because they aren't invincible. The film is well-made, the action is good, the acting is also excellent, and the drama, but above all, the fear, is palpable; it leaps off the screen.
No te vas a aburrir porque aunque la historia sea muy conocida y real, es decir, todos sabemos el destino de estos personajes, siempre llama la atención el como pudo haber sido todo aquello. Esto está basado en relatos, informes y reportajes periodísticos por lo que es muy probable que la ficción haya sido usada en algunos momentos. Hay que ver estas cosas porque es algo que no vanagloria a estos grupos criminales, generalmente hay muchas cosas por ahí que "exaltan" estas figuras quedando como héroes o personas que hacen lo que hacen por y para la gente; no es así. De hecho acá vemos a estos tipos preocupados, débiles e inseguros cuando no tienen el poder ni el control de las cosas, hay que desmitificarlos porque no son invencibles. La película está bien hecha, la acción que hay está buena, la interpretación y actuaciones también entiendo están a la altura y el drama pero sobretodo el miedo es algo que se respira, traspasa la pantalla.
Why do I talk so much about fear and tension? Well, because those of us who live in a country where corruption is everywhere know, indirectly, what that's like and what it must feel like to put your principles first in the face of criminal power, regardless of where that power comes from; unfortunately, there's a familiarity there. Alfonso Herrera's work, along with Noé Hernández's, is truly top-notch, as is Héctor Kotsifakis's portrayal of El Chapo. I think that beyond the fact that they are real people, the performances of all three are well worth watching; making real characters your own can be complicated. It's a recommendable film. Before seeing it, I did read many reviews praising it to the skies as a masterpiece because it's currently the most-watched film on Netflix worldwide, but honestly, I think there's a bit of exaggeration. It's good and well worth watching, but that's about it; it's not extraordinary. It's an hour and a half long, which is appreciated. I'll leave the trailer below.
Por qué hablo tanto del miedo y la tensión? - pues porque uno que vive en un país en donde la corrupción está en cada esquina, indirectamente sabemos lo que es eso y lo que se debe de sentir, el poner por delante tus principios frente a un poder criminal, independientemente de donde venga ese poder; lamentablemente hay una familiaridad ahí. El trabajo de Alfonso Herrera junto al de Noé Hernández es realmente top pero también el de Héctor Kotsifakis dándole vida a El Chapo; creo que más allá de que son personas que existen la actuación de los tres vale mucho la pena, hacer suyos personajes reales puede ser complicado. Es un film recomendable, antes de verlo si que es verdad que leí muchas criticas poniéndolo por los cielos como una obra maestra porque está siendo actualmente la película más vista de Netflix a nivel mundial pero honestamente creo que hay un poco de exageración. Es buena y vale mucho la pena verla pero hasta allí, no es algo extraordinario. Dura hora y media, cosa que se agradece. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
