What if I told you this movie has almost no dialogue, its driving force is the music, and it's fueled by a brutal desire for revenge for the loss of a loved one? Would you watch it? - Well, this is Motor City. I'm currently watching Reacher, this Prime Video series that you probably already know. This film stars the same actor, Alan Ritchson, and here it seems like John Miller, the protagonist of this story, is Reacher's twin brother, not physically, but because of his robotic and determined personality when it comes to achieving his goals, in addition to, of course, how brutal and machine-like he is in confrontations and fights. And although all this might make you want to watch it, the truly cool thing about this movie is its playlist and how it shapes the plot.
Que pasa si te digo que esta película no tiene casi diálogos, su hilo conductor es la música y está movida por un deseo brutal de cobrar venganza por la pérdida de un amor, la verías? - pues esto es Motor City. Actualmente estoy viendo Raecher, esta serie de Prime Video que seguramente sabrán cual es, pues este film es con el mismo actor, Alan Ritchson, y acá pareciera que John Miller, el protagonista de esta historia, es el hermano gemelo de Reacher pero no por un tema físico, sino por la personalidad robótica y determinada que tiene para conseguir algo además claro está de lo bestia y maquina que es a la hora de los enfrentamientos y peleas. Y aunque con todo esto ya den ganas de verla la realidad es que lo verdaderamente cool de esta película es su playlist y como ella va marcando la trama.
Here we have John Miller, an average worker in late 1970s Detroit who falls in love with a woman with somewhat questionable ties. She, Sophia (Shailene Woodley), works at a nightclub seemingly run by a thug or gangster, Reynolds (Ben Foster), who was furious that she ended up with Miller. Humiliated, this criminal unjustly frames John and sends him to prison. It's known that Reynolds has bought off local police and thugs, so the job wasn't too difficult. Miller, devastated by it all, will seek a way to make Reynolds and his crew pay for all the harm they caused in his life and Sophia's.
Acá tenemos a John Miller, un trabajador promedio de la ciudad de Detroit de finales de los 70 que se enamora de una mujer con unos lazos un poco cuestionables. Ella, Sophia (Shailene Woodley) trabaja en un local nocturno el cual parece ser manejado por un matón o gángster, Reynolds (Ben Foster), a quien no le gustó que ella se terminara yendo con Miller. Ante tal humillación este criminal incrimina de manera injusta a John y lo termina mandando a la cárcel. Se sabe que este tipo tiene comprados a policías y matones locales por lo que ese trabajo no fue muy difícil de hacer. Miller, destruido por todo aquello, buscará la forma de hacer pagar a Reynolds y compañía todo el mal que causaron en su vida y en la de Sophia.
To achieve all of this, Miller will have some help, and we'll see how he gradually tries to accomplish everything he has in mind. To find out if he succeeds, you'll have to watch the film. As I mentioned, one of the film's biggest draws is that it has no dialogue; there are barely a couple of lines. So how do you understand the plot? Through the songs. They help provide context for everything that's happening because they were meticulously chosen by Potsy Ponciroli, the director, who demonstrated his excellent musical taste. We're talking about songs by David Bowie, Donna Summer, Foxy, Sniff 'N' The Tears, Al Stewart, and others. Given that it's set in the late 70s, this style makes sense—a very distinct rock and soul sound. And no, it's not a musical, because I understand that it can be confusing; in fact, nothing could be further from that than this film.
Para lograr todo eso Miller contará con cierta ayuda y veremos como poco a poco intenta ir consiguiendo todo lo que tiene en mente, para saber si tiene éxito tendrán que ver el film. Como les decía uno de los atractivos más top de esta película es que no cuenta con diálogos, apenas habrán un par nada más. Pero entonces como se entiende la trama? - pues por sus canciones. Ellas ayudan a dar contexto a todo lo que está pasando porque fueron escogidas minuciosamente por Potsy Ponciroli, su director, quien demostró el gran gusto musical que tiene. Estamos hablando de temas de David Bowie, Donna Summer, Foxy, Sniff 'N' The Tears, Al Stewart, etc. Al ser finales de los 70 tiene sentido este estilo, un rock y soul muy bien marcado. Y no, no es un musical porque entiendo que se puede confundir, de hecho no hay nada más alejado a eso que esta película.
It's an action-revenge thriller with profound underlying themes—if you ask me, it's the ideal movie. The action is excellent; with someone like Alan Ritchson at the helm, you can be sure it will be high quality. There are chases, epic fights, all kinds of weapons, and one detail: it's more graphic and violent than I expected. I knew there would be blood and punches, but it turned out to be a much more intense film. The lack of dialogue doesn't make the experience boring; surprisingly, it maintains tension and keeps expectations high. The story never feels empty because there's a powerful theme playing in the background that serves as the perfect complement. The action is paramount, but there's also drama. Ultimately, it's a love story, and that love is precisely what fuels the revenge.
Es un thriller de acción y venganza pero con grandes temas de fondo, si me le preguntan la película ideal. La acción es muy buena, si tenemos a un tipo como Alan Ritchson a la cabeza pueden estar seguros de que será de calidad. Persecuciones, grandes peleas, armas de todo tipo y un detalle, es más gráfica y violenta de lo que pensaba. Si sabía que iba a ver sangre y golpes pero al final resultó siendo un film mucho más subido de tono. El hecho de que no haya diálogos no hace que la experiencia sea aburrida, sorpresivamente mantiene la tensión y la expectativa siempre alta, nunca se siente vacía la historia porque en el fondo está sonado algún gran tema que sirve como el complemento perfecto. La acción es primordial pero también hay drama, al final es una historia de amor y es que precisamente ese amor es usado como uno de los motores para hacer más satisfactoria la venganza.
Despite being an action film, the acting is quite good. Connecting with and interpreting a character in a film without dialogue is more complicated, so the actor's skill is even more crucial. I think the three main leads, Alan, Shailene, and Ben Foster, were outstanding; they managed to capture the essence of their characters without hardly saying a word. It's not perfect, but it's a film that delivers and stands out from the rest. The premise of music guiding everything is fully realized, especially because the songs are very specific, and their lyrics perfectly explain the context of the film at the moment they start playing. For me, that's a huge plus as a film and music fan. Highly recommended. It's easy to watch, everything is clear, it's entertaining, and of course, it's always satisfying to see revenge. It's just over an hour and a half long. I've included the trailer below in case you haven't seen it yet.
A pesar de ser una película de acción las actuaciones son bastante buenas. Lograr conectar e interpretar en un film que no tiene diálogos es más complicado por lo que la calidad del actor es más necesaria. Creo que los tres grandes protagonistas, Alan, Shailene y Ben Foster estuvieron a la altura, lograron captar la esencia de sus personajes sin apenas decir palabra alguna. No será perfecta pero es una película que cumple y que es diferente al resto, la premisa de que sea la música la que guie todo se cumple a cabalidad sobretodo porque son temas muy específicos cuya letra explica muy bien el contexto en el que está la película en el momento que comienza a sonar, eso para mi es puntazo como fanático del cine y de la musica que soy. Super recomendada, no es compleja de ver, se entiende todo sin problemas, es entretenida y claro, siempre es gratificante ver cobrar venganza. Poco más de hora y media.
