Apple TV is known for producing quality content, as I mentioned in my review of Lucky. They strive to maintain a certain level of quality, both in their stories and their actors. This time, we have a plot set during the Soviet era, in the midst of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, but with a very different feel than you might expect. It's not a war film or anything like that; it's a very typical Kenneth Branagh action comedy. Add to that Ryan Reynolds, an actor who is inherently funny and charismatic, and the result is at least an entertaining film. Whether it truly lives up to the quality we've come to expect from Apple TV is something viewers will have to decide.
Apple TV se caracteriza por hacer buenas producciones, por acá lo dije cuando se reseñó Lucky, tratan de mantener cierto nivel de calidad ya sea entre lo que son las historias con los actores en cuestión. En esta oportunidad tenemos una trama que nos ubica en plena época de la Unión Soviética, en esa Guerra Fría que tuvieron contra los Estados Unidos, pero con unos matices muy diferentes de los que se puedan imaginar. No es un film bélico ni nada por el estilo, es una comedia llena de acción muy típica de Kenneth Branagh hay que decir. Si a esto le sumamos a Ryan Reynolds, un actor que de por si puede ser bastante gracioso y carismático pues el resultado será una película cuando menos entretenida. Ya si verdaderamente es de la calidad que estamos acostumbrados a recibir de Apple TV es algo que decidirá los que la vean.
Troy Kelly (Ryan Reynolds) is a U.S. Navy lieutenant pilot assigned to a mission based on his skill and piloting ability. The mission involves going to Russia as a spy, completing a task, and returning—a straightforward job in theory. But reality is quite different. Kelly finds himself trapped in a mountainous region after his plane is shot down. One would think he'd be safe, given the remote location, but in the Soviet Union, everything was known, down to the smallest detail. This is where Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), a former KGB agent, comes in. He decides to help Kelly. Obviously, this is all highly suspicious, as such actions are punishable by death, but Nikolai has his reasons for doing so.
Troy Kelly (Ryan Reynolds) es un piloto teniente de la marina de los Estados Unidos a quien se le encomienda una misión dada su calidad y destreza al momento de pilotear. Dicha misión tiene que ver con ir a Rusia en calidad de espionaje, hacer un trabajo y regresar, en teoría todo sencillo. Pero la realidad es otra y es que Kelly termina atrapado en una zona montañosa tras el derribo de su avión. Uno pensaría que estaba seguro ya que es un sitio apartado pero en la Unión Soviética todo se sabía, hasta lo más mínimo. Es acá donde entra Nikolai Ustinov (Kenneth Branagh), un antiguo agente de la KGB que decide ayudarlo. Evidentemente todo esto es muy sospechoso porque estas acciones se pagan con la muerte pero Nikolai tiene sus razones para hacerlo.
Nikolai is quite unique, with a somewhat eccentric personality; he's a former KGB agent who loves the United States and its culture, listens to its music, and one of his dreams is to try McDonald's. Once they're together, the plan is simple: reach the embassy before being caught by the Soviet machine. As I mentioned, this is a film where action and comedy predominate. Branagh's films are in that style; if you've ever seen his adaptations of Agatha Christie novels, you'll know what I mean. And then there's Ryan Reynolds, who is inherently funny and is ideal for this action/comedy combination—Deadpool is the best example. When you put them together, you have guaranteed entertainment, although it must be said that in this film, Branagh overshadows Reynolds, becoming the center of attention thanks to the great action scenes and fights he stars in.
Nikolai es muy particular, tiene una personalidad un tanto extravagante; es un ex KGB que le encanta Estados Unidos y su cultura, escucha su musica y uno de sus sueños es probar McDonald's. Una vez que están juntos el plan es simple: llegar a la embajada antes de ser atrapados por la maquinaria soviética. Como les comentaba estamos ante un film en donde la acción y la comedia es lo que predomina. Las películas de Branagh son de ese estilo, si alguna vez vieron las adaptaciones que hizo de las novelas de Agatha Christie se darán cuenta; y por el otro lado está Ryan Reynolds quien de por si es un tipo que da risa y que para esta combinación de acción/comedia es ideal, Deadpool es el mejor ejemplo. Cuando los unes a los dos tienes entretenimiento asegurado aunque hay que decir que en este film Branagh le pasa por encima a Reynolds convirtiéndose en el centro de atención gracias a grandes escenas de acción y peleas que llega a protagonizar.
The plot is very basic and linear, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. There are no surprises or shortcuts, and that's something I missed—that element of surprise at some point in the film. It's true that this approach isn't always effective, but sometimes it helps add depth to films like this where espionage and chases are the main focus. The action scenes are good; I wasn't used to seeing Branagh in this type of fight scene, but he does well, and they're fun to watch. It also helps that they used various locations for them: a train, a plane, a building, etc. There's an implicit comedy, the kind that comes from the interactions and behavior of the protagonists; there's a lot of chemistry between the two, which is very noticeable on screen. Action and comedy always go well together. The point is, it's not a boring film; there's tension, chases, fights, and the occasional laugh. I'd say it has everything it needs to succeed.
La trama es super básica y lineal, tiene un comienzo, un desarrollo y un final. No hay sorpresas ni atajos y eso es algo que me faltó, ese factor sorpresa en algún momento de la película. Es verdad que no siempre es válido ese recurso pero a veces ayuda a darle profundidad a películas como esta en donde el espionaje y la persecución son el plato fuerte. Las escenas de acción son buenas, no tenía a Branagh en ese registro de peleas pero lo hace bien, son divertidas de ver. Ayuda también que hayan usado varias locaciones para ellas: un tren, un avión, un edificio, etc. Hay una comedia implícita, esa que se da gracias a las interacciones y comportamientos de los protagonistas, hay mucha química entre los dos cosa que se nota mucho a través de la pantalla. La acción con la comedia siempre van bien de la mano. La cosa es que no es una película que aburre, hay tensión, persecuciones, peleas y una que otra risa; diría que lo tiene todo para aprobar.
The setting is decent; achieving the Soviet atmosphere was a success, but it felt unrealistic to me, especially in certain scenes during the Victory Day parade in Moscow. I've already mentioned the acting, but I want to emphasize that both leads were adequate, one more so than the other, but ultimately the film has very average performances. I have to say that this movie, at least for me, will end up being just another run-of-the-mill film; I particularly expected a bit more after seeing the trailer and reading the brief synopsis. It's not a bad film because it's entertaining and fun, but it falls short in some areas. I feel like it was missing something, and I'm not quite sure what that something could be. The ending is predictable, exactly what you'd expect from the beginning of the story; there weren't any interesting twists. It's under two hours long, easy to watch, and available on Apple TV. I'll leave the trailer here so you can check it out and decide whether to give it a chance or not; do as I did and give it a try.
A nivel de ambientación está decente, lograr el ambiente soviético fue un acierto pero poco realista para mi, sobretodo con unas escenas en particular en pleno desfile del Día de la Victoria en Moscú. Ya les había comentado de las actuaciones pero recalcar que ambos cumplieron, una más que el otro pero termina siendo un film con interpretaciones muy promedios. Tengo que decir que está película, por lo menos para mi, terminará como una más del montón; particularmente esperaba un poco más de ella después de haber visto el tráiler y su breve sinopsis. No es un film malo porque entretiene y es divertido pero si se queda corto con algunas cosas, siento que le faltó algo más y no se muy bien que puede ser. Su final es el esperado, es el que te vas a imaginar al principio de la trama; tampoco hubo ningún giro allí interesante. Dura menos de dos horas, es sencilla de ver y está en Apple TV. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo y decidan si le dan una oportunidad o no; hagan como yo y dénsela.
