Cinema is full of clichés, and this film is no exception, especially when the first thing you hear is salsa/guaracha music in a beach setting and certain sepia tones in the atmosphere (despite it being nighttime). But it wasn't the eye-catching poster or those first few minutes of the film that kept me convinced to watch it; it was the actors. And yes, once again, I was guided by the cast. But really, how can you decide not to see a movie starring Eva Green and Samuel L. Jackson? Anyone who knows them knows what big names they are. I didn't know what to expect, so one of my first conclusions was that what I was watching was very similar to the Mexican/Venezuelan/Colombian telenovelas that used to be on television and became very popular. And I say this because of the way the plot was developing.
De clichés está lleno el cine y esta película no es la excepción y más cuando lo primero que escuchas es una salsa/guaracha en un lugar playero y ciertos tonos sepia en el ambiente (a pesar de ser de noche). Pero no fue su poster llamativo ni estos primeros minutos de film los que me mantuvieron convencido de verlo, fueron sus actores; y si, otra vez guiándome por el elenco. Pero es que a ver, como decides no ver una película en donde actúan Eva Green y Samuel L. Jackson? - para el que los conoce sabe los grandes nombres que son. No sabía que me iba a encontrar por lo que una de las primeras conclusiones a las que pude llegar es que lo que estaba viendo se parecía mucho a las telenovelas mexicanas/venezolanas/colombianas que pasaban en televisión y que se hicieron muy famosas. Y esto lo digo por la forma en el fondo que se estaba gestando con trama.
We have a couple consisting of Jack Wolff (Samuel L. Jackson) and his wife Nora (Eva Green). Jack is a hardened criminal being pursued by the FBI, to the point that he could be caught at any moment for embezzlement. Nora is with him for the money, never for real love. Desperate to avoid capture, Jack decides it's time to fake his death so he can have peace of mind and collect a $30 million life insurance policy. But of course, he can't pull off this plan alone, so he decides to involve his wife to help him and split the money. What Jack doesn't know, or perhaps he does, is that her true intention is to kill him, as she's tired and fed up with the mistreatment and living with him.
Tenemos a una pareja conformada por Jack Wolff (Samuel L. Jackson) y su esposa Nora (Eva Green). Jack es un criminal en toda regla que está siendo perseguido por el FBI al punto de que en cualquier momento lo atrapan por malversación de fondos. Nora está con él por el dinero, nunca por un amor real. Ante la urgencia de Jack por querer evitar que lo atrapen decide que ha llegado el momento de fingir su muerte para así estar tranquilo y cobrar un seguro de vida de 30 millones de dólares. Pero claro, este plan no lo puede llevar a cabo él solo por lo que decide involucrar a su esposa para que lo ayude y así repartirse el dinero. Lo que no sabe Jack, o quizás si, es que las intenciones de ella es matarlo de verdad ya que está cansada y obstinada de los malos tratos y la convivencia con Jack.
Nora has a lover, Chad, the typical surfer type who's always smoking weed, and because he's so slow from being high all the time, they want to implicate/blame him in this affair. Meanwhile, two police officers are investigating these events, one of them being Bianca (María Pedraza, from Money Heist), who leads the investigation. From here, a kind of game begins, the aim being to mislead each other through deception. Remember that Jack wants something, but so does Nora, so the film is essentially about acting behind each other's backs, with no one knowing what their next move will be. After reading this, you'll understand the similarities to a soap opera; this plot is all you'd expect from a telenovela, in addition to the acting itself. One of the questions that comes to mind is how actors of this caliber make films like this. Is it for the money? For the love of the art? To avoid losing visibility? Or all of the above? Sometimes it's worth asking these questions.
Nora tiene un amante, Chad, el típico tipo surfista que vive fumando marihuana y al que por ser alguien muy lento gracias a estar todo el día fumado lo quieren incluir/culpar en este asunto. En paralelo tenemos a dos policías que están detrás de estos movimientos, uno de ellos es Bianca (María Pedraza, la misma de la Casa de Papel) quien es la líder de la investigación. A partir de acá comienza una especie de juego que lo que busca es despistar al otro a través del engaño. Recuerden que Jack quiere conseguir algo pero Nora también por lo que el film básicamente es actuar a espalda del otro sin que al final del día se sepa cual será el movimiento de cada quien. Después de haber leído entenderán el por qué las similitudes con una telenovela, esta trama es todo lo que se ve en ellas además de las propias actuaciones. Una de las preguntas que se me vienen a la mente es como actores de este status hacen películas como esta, será por dinero?, amor al arte?, no querer perder visibilidad? o todas la anteriores? - a veces cabe mucho hacerse esas preguntas.
The film isn't bad or difficult to watch, but at times it seems like a satire in itself. There's no action of any kind; everything revolves around the intrigue and suspense of devising a plan to both disappear and murder someone. At times, it feels stagnant, stuck in repetitive performances and clichés, to the point where gossip takes over. It's not boring because the satire I mentioned prevents that, but it lacks dynamism. The only redeeming quality is the ending. When everything unfolds, a series of unexpected plot twists occur—they are plot twists, after all—and they actually save the film somewhat. These are actions and characters that weren't on anyone's radar and suddenly become incredibly important. I think the film breathes a little easier thanks to how they chose to conclude the story.
La película no es que sea mala o difícil de ver sino que por momentos parece ser una sátira en si misma. Acá no hay acción de ningún tipo, todo busca andar bajo la intriga y el suspenso que supone elaborar un plan tanto para desaparecer como para asesinar a alguien. Hay veces que no avanza, la siento estancada en actuaciones repetidas y clichés al punto de que estamos en situaciones en donde el chisme es lo que predomina. No aburre porque esa sátira de la que les hablo no deja que eso pase pero si le falta que sea más dinámica. Lo unico que rescato es el final. Cuando se ejecuta todo ocurren una serie de plot twist bien inesperados, por algo son giros en la trama, que realmente salvan un poco al film. Son acciones y personajes que no estaban en el radar de nadie y que de repente cobran una importancia repentina. Creo que la película respira ligeramente por como decidieron cerrar la historia.
Seeing Samuel L. Jackson act with Eva Green isn't anything new; they already know each other, so their chemistry is quite obvious. Their performances are very basic and forgettable, considering the quality of both actors. I can't find anything redeeming about this film. In conclusion: it's a 90-minute film where we enjoy Jackson's antics in superficial and carefree roles, and Eva Green's beauty, but nothing more. The plot is simple but attempts a decent ending. It's an American version of a Latin American telenovela story, that's exactly how I perceived it. Do I recommend it? - It's ideal for passing the time. Ver a Samuel L. Jackson actuar con Eva Green no es algo nuevo, ya se conocen por lo que la química entre ellos es muy evidente. Son interpretaciones bien básicas y nada memorables teniendo en cuenta la calidad de ambos. No rescato nada en este departamento. En conclusión: es un film de hora y media en donde disfrutamos de las ocurrencias de Jackson haciendo papeles superficiales y despreocupados y la belleza de Eva Green, más nada. Su trama es simple pero busca cerrar de manera decente. Es una versión americana de una historia latina de novelas, así tal cual la percibí. La recomiendo? - para pasar el rato está ideal.
