Asian horror cinema is wild; the level of dedication poured into these productions is spectacular. Following up on Exhuma, today we’re looking at another Korean horror film—this time in the "found footage" style. It’s Day 22 of our deep dive into the genre, and we’re exploring a subgenre—for those who might not know—that unfolds through footage supposedly recorded by the characters themselves and later "discovered." Think of it as a POV (point-of-view) perspective. Before October ends, I’ll feature a Japanese film, along with one from either Thailand or the Philippines, to complete this "trinity" of Asian horror. As for today’s pick, it follows the classic premise: explorers venture where they shouldn't, and end up paying a very steep price.

As I mentioned, these premises are quite generic; what truly matters is how you develop them. We follow a young man who leads a project called "Horror Times"—a YouTube-style channel dedicated to paranormal exploration—much like a team of ghost hunters. He recruits a group of people—fans of the channel and others with prior experience in such activities—to venture into the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital. The catch is that the stories and the reputation surrounding the site are truly chilling: those who enter often emerge deeply disturbed—eventually taking their own lives—or simply never make it out at all. Driven by a desperate hunger for views and viral fame—a modern-day scourge—they are willing to take extreme risks to capture the best footage, all while broadcasting the entire ordeal live.

A bit of context: a few years ago, at that hospital, more than 40 patients—along with the director, who was found hanged—reportedly died by suicide. In the wake of these deaths, strange stories have emerged. Equipped with all sorts of cameras and specialized technology for their supernatural hunt, the group enters the facility and begins their exploration. What initially seems like a prank—staged to drum up fear and boost viewership for the broadcast—eventually spirals into a true nightmare, steeped in pure, paranormal terror. Many of you are likely familiar with this genre; there are plenty of such films out there, but few quite like this one. Why do I say that? Because many of those other films feel like parodies of this very Korean movie. Every time I watch something from Korea, I’m reminded of one of their greatest strengths: their actors. It’s truly impressive how they inhabit their roles. On top of that, the paranormal elements are exceptionally well-executed—there are effective jump scares, a constant sense of tension, and that lingering feeling that something is always lurking right behind someone.

I recommend watching this in total darkness, as the footage itself is very dark—it’s meant to simulate the experience of everything being recorded using GoPros and flashlights. The plot is solid: the characters set out with a specific goal, but a rift develops within the group during their investigation, and from that point on, everything goes downhill. It might be a bit slow to get going at first, but I believe that’s intentional—it’s all about establishing the characters and building that ever-present, unsettling atmosphere. That said, once things kick off, there’s no turning back; the final 40 minutes—nearly half the film—are a relentless series of paranormal encounters. The key is to fully immerse yourself in the story and let yourself be scared—to commit to the experience just as the people inside that hospital do. The scenes work well, as do the scattered, eerie noises; the jump scares are packed with suspense and horror, and the actual imagery of what’s causing it all is quite intense and explicit. One of the film’s strengths is that it doesn’t overuse these elements—they only appear when they’re truly needed—which is why the plot never becomes boring.

As I mentioned, the performances are everything here; Koreans—and Asians in general—bring an extra level of passion to their acting, which makes their films far more impactful. I only recognized two actors, both of whom appeared in Squid Game, though it would be a stretch to say I actually "know" them. I think the fact that the cameras are kept so close—with the characters constantly filming themselves—makes the experience feel much more "real"; the fear and terror they convey are unmistakable. This is a very strong found footage film—perhaps not the absolute best, but certainly top-tier. The ending is exactly what you’d expect from this type of story; there aren’t many surprises, but it’s a solid, logical conclusion. It has suspense, terror, and jump scares—all the elements that make this genre so enjoyable. It runs for an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below—take a look!

An excellent Korean horror film. It delivers on the scares, especially throughout the final act. 100% recommended if you’re into the exploration and paranormal genres. Cheers!
