Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

I believe 2026 has been one of the best years for horror cinema; several truly great films have been released, and Undertone can be added to that list. This is day 19 of talking about horror during this "spooky season." As I mentioned, this year has been spectacular for the genre—personally, I didn’t expect it to be this good, and, above all, of such high quality. Undertone comes from the team at A24—geniuses when it comes to horror and suspense—and I found it incredibly uncomfortable to watch; not because it’s bad, but because it succeeds so well at being terrifying. Every year, a study is conducted to determine which horror films trigger the most scares, measured by heart rate, and Undertone—which came out this year—ranked among the top. It seems that, in general, people didn’t like it all that much, but, strangely enough, I actually enjoyed it.

This isn’t just a horror story; it’s also a top-notch psychological thriller. Evy Babic (Nina Kiri) is a young woman living in her mother’s home while her mother lies bedridden, terminally ill. Caring for her consumes both her time and her quality of life, so, as a distraction, she co-hosts a podcast with Justin (Adam DiMarco) where they discuss paranormal events and phenomena. While some of what they cover is fabricated, other topics leave room for genuine doubt—Justin tends to be more open-minded, while Evy is more analytical and logical. One day, they receive a series of audio recordings—ten, to be exact—that promise to be among the most disturbing and chilling things they have ever heard. And, believe me, they certainly live up to that promise.

As she begins listening to each audio recording, Evy’s perception starts to shift; it’s as if everything she hears is being replicated within her own home. Her paranoia intensifies to the point where she no longer feels comfortable in her own house—though she tries hard to hide it. The recordings come from a couple experiencing strange noises, the cries of babies, and deeply unsettling nursery rhymes—in short, a series of supernatural events. From this point on, Evy must live with this mounting anxiety, trying to determine whether what she is experiencing is the work of a paranormal entity or merely the result of hallucinations and delusions. One of the film’s strengths is how it combines various elements to make the experience more unsettling and effective as a piece of horror—for instance, the inclusion of religious imagery (the mother is a woman of faith, so such symbols are ever-present), the prominent and chilling role of nursery rhymes (just imagine hearing those at night!), and the various stories that emerge as the investigation into the recordings unfolds—touching on everything from medieval demons to other dark phenomena.

If the film is so uncomfortable to watch, it’s because of how it was made, not because of its underlying themes. I’m referring to the camera angles, the cinematography, and the use of "dead space"—everything comes together to ensure that you truly feel uneasy while inside that house. There are moments featuring jump scares, as well as slow camera movements that build anticipation for something to happen. Occasionally, the film presents a shot containing an image of the Virgin Mary or other religious iconography; while these aren't inherently "bad" things, for some strange reason, when paired with these themes, they evoke a distinct sense of dread. As I mentioned, Evy is mentally worn down by her mother’s situation—so what does the film do? It leans into that, aiming to keep the viewer guessing. This is reflected in an ending that remains open to multiple interpretations. Are these paranormal events and the demonic presence real, or is it all a manifestation of trauma, hallucinations, and the grieving process surrounding her mother’s condition? That’s for you to decide.

The protagonist is a single individual—at least, the only one we see on camera. I believe Evy’s journey leads straight into total madness; she goes from being completely indifferent and unconcerned about these kinds of matters to finding herself in a situation that utterly overwhelms her. She shifts from questioning everything through the lens of pure logic to gradually unraveling, driven by a truly terrifying presence that haunts every corner of her home. I can honestly say this is one of the best films I’ve seen this year, given how well-crafted it is. I thoroughly enjoyed it; it keeps you in a state of constant tension and intrigue, the suspense is masterfully handled, the horror is highly effective, and the ending isn’t all that predictable. Even as someone who doesn’t scare easily, I can tell you there are a couple of genuinely compelling scenes. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. Highly recommended—I think it’s a tremendously underrated film from 2026. I’ve included the trailer here.
