One of life’s little surprises is that Sinister—a film I had started watching years ago—remained unfinished. How did that happen? Well, back in 2012, I was watching it in the theater when a technical glitch occurred, and the screening couldn't continue. I had the chance to see it again later, but I didn't take it, and so it remained unwatched until last night—14 years later. Many people—both experts and casual horror fans—consider this one of the scariest films in the genre. Given that the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious were involved, you might expect that to be true, but is it really that frightening? Is it as disturbing as they say? When I watched it, I turned off all the lights and sat in a pitch-black room—I wanted the full experience—but the result surprised me: I had expected quite a bit more.

The story follows Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) and his family. Ellison is an author of true-crime novels who is currently going through a rough patch; his last two books failed to achieve the success he had hoped for—unlike his debut, which was the work that truly launched his career. Driven by an obsession to regain his former glory, he moves his family into a house that was the site of a brutal murder—the killing of an entire family and the disappearance of a young girl—intending to investigate the massacre and gather material for his next book. As the days pass, the behavior of both Ellison and his children begins to shift: Ellison’s, due to his intense drive to write the book; his children’s, because of a supernatural force haunting the house.

The situation shifts entirely when Ellison, drawn by strange noises, ends up in the house's attic and discovers a box of film reels. These reels contain footage of a series of murders that took place over several decades. Each one is more disturbing than the last, and it is within these recordings that Ellison notices something lurking—along with a recurring, mysterious mark or symbol. It turns out that everything points to a demon from the Babylonian era named Bughuul, who feeds on the souls of children while corrupting them, compelling them to murder their own families. At this point, the nature of the threat changes; it is now a demonic one. Ellison is left with a choice: continue working on his book, or protect his family—a family that has been steadily falling apart due to these events. The film is undeniably intense, delivering effective horror through well-executed jump scares, a deeply unsettling atmosphere that builds constant suspense, and the compelling mystery surrounding these occult-related murders.

When I say I expected more, I mean that—given the reputation this film has—I think there are others that far surpass it. After all, Sinister always makes people's top 3 or top 5 lists, so you expect something that will truly keep you up at night or at least make you sleep with the lights on; does this film deliver that? For me, no. It’s a very good movie, but it’s neither epic nor extraordinary. The plot is solid, the "detective" aspect is highly engaging, the tension surrounding the paranormal is intense, and the figure of Bughuul really sticks with you—that part is very well executed. Plus, a story involving children doing strange things adds a lot to the experience. It is scary and imposing, sure, but I’m not sure it lives up to the massive hype. The film isn't graphic, yet it is disturbing; the deaths stem from pure evil and are left somewhat to the imagination—they aren't explicit at all.

Ethan Hawke is a great actor, well-known for his work in this genre, and he truly delivers a stellar performance. He is the very backbone of this film; the family and other characters are secondary, as it is Hawke who sustains the plot, driving all its tension and suspense. In short, Sinister is a film that everyone should see—it ranks among the great horror classics of the last 20 years. That said, when you watch it, try to keep your expectations balanced—neither too low nor sky-high. It has all the ingredients of a solid horror movie, though how much you enjoy it will likely depend on your personal sensitivity to the genre. It runs just under two hours; I’ve included the trailer below, in case you—like me—haven’t seen it yet.
