Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

It’s been 21 days—three weeks—that we’ve been talking about horror, and we’re not stopping until the very end. Today, I’m setting aside paranormal horror to dive straight into a film that many consider a seasonal classic: Trick 'r Treat. While you couldn’t strictly call it a slasher, it certainly borrows elements from the genre; in fact, its stories encompass just about everything you’d expect from a film centered on the spookiest night of the year. It’s been 19 years—this 2007 movie has already become a major touchstone, especially thanks to Sam, the small character who serves as the protagonist across these interwoven tales.

This is an anthology film that weaves together four distinct stories, all taking place on the same Halloween night in a small Ohio town. While they may initially seem unrelated, they are actually all connected by the presence of Sam—a small child dressed in a burlap-like pajama suit—who punishes anyone who disrespects or fails to follow the traditional rules of Halloween. What’s really cool is that each story focuses on a different aspect or subgenre of horror: one features a serial killer; another involves a group of women who are not what they seem—potentially turning out to be supernatural creatures; a third follows a group of teenagers who attempt to play a prank on a young woman, only to find themselves tormented by spirits; and the fourth centers on an elderly man who hates Halloween and receives a visit from our friend Sam.

What’s interesting is that each of these stories has its own plot and background; the film takes the time to flesh out every character. As the night unfolds, we see how these stories—and the characters within them—begin to intertwine; after all, it’s a small town, so everyone is bound to cross paths eventually. Throughout these narratives, we encounter gore, death, paranormal events, suspense, and a touch of comedy and satire—all culminating in tragedy or, at the very least, the kind of isolated incidents typical of Halloween night. The film itself is an absolute delight, as these stories are so fundamental and packed with clichés that they perfectly capture the true essence of a horror movie: the serial killer hiding in plain sight; women who aren’t looking for a wild night out, but rather for victims; ghostly children tied to a tragedy from 30 years ago; and a grumpy old man who ends up paying a steep price for his apathy—and, more importantly, for his past.

Visually, it’s perfect; it doesn’t try to impress or come across as pretentious. It’s simply a film that presents its violence, apparitions, transformations, and deaths in the most straightforward and functional way possible. There are a few scenes that might give you a bit of a jump, and other moments that will make you laugh—after all, a good horror film often incorporates comedy. It also leans heavily into suspense and dread, especially since all the characters share the unsettling feeling that something—or someone—is lurking right behind them. Despite how "light" it might appear, it’s actually anything but; it features partial nudity and can be quite graphic at times—it’s definitely not suitable for children. Personally, I really enjoyed it; I can see why it’s so highly recommended—it’s the perfect embodiment of what Halloween is all about.

The performances are fairly average; there isn’t a single lead, as the film consists of four stories, making every character who appears an important part of the movie. I can say that everyone does their job—some better than others—but the end result is decent. There are many children involved, and as I’ve mentioned before, they always add an extra dimension to films like this. The ending—or rather, the conclusion to each story—depends on your perspective; in a sense, they all end poorly, but then again, the characters have different motivations, which ultimately shapes their respective fates. It’s a good watch, with something for everyone. I highly recommend this film—I really enjoyed it. It’s easy to see why it’s considered a "must-watch" of this era; it’s definitely worth your time. It runs for less than an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below.

To last for several years, it brings together everything that Halloween is about, 4 stories that unfold, where people will be entertained.
