Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
Yesterday, we discussed Gonjiam and how it stands as perhaps one of the best films in Korean horror cinema. I promised to showcase the best of Thai horror—to be followed by Japanese cinema—in order to cover the most significant pillars of Asian horror. On October 23rd, we will talk about Shutter—not the 2008 remake, which was terrible, but the original 2004 Thai film. There is something about Asian horror that makes it uniquely terrifying; whether it’s a willingness to fully embody the face of terror without restraint, or a more effective use of jump scares, the fact remains that these films are incredibly impactful. The tone of this movie is paranormal, as the underlying premise centers on a vengeful spirit.
In this story, we meet Tun and Jane, a couple who make a terrible decision one night while driving. As they travel along a road, a woman suddenly crosses their path and is struck by their car. Instead of stopping to check on her or offer help, they choose to flee, leaving her behind. Tun, a photographer who makes a living shooting various events, begins to notice strange anomalies in his photographs—specifically while working at a graduation. Upon developing the images, he discovers white patches—resembling a kind of mist or fog—accompanied by distorted, disfigured faces. All of this begins immediately following the accident; it seems the couple’s lives will never be the same again. As time passes, things grow increasingly bizarre, and the paranormal experiences begin to intensify.
At a point when there was still uncertainty regarding what was actually happening, Jane conducts a deeper investigation, reaching some quite revealing conclusions linked to Tun’s past. The connections are such that his friends begin to commit suicide, one by one, driven by the torment inflicted by this spirit. From this moment on, the couple must do their best to contend with the entity, all while trying to uncover what it is seeking. This film—also a Thai production—competes with The Medium for the title of the best in its class; both are excellent, but in my view, this one has a slight edge. Essentially, the plot is driven by the spirit’s quest for vengeance, which makes it all the more dangerous. Yet, this motivation doesn’t always stem from mere hatred or rage—it can also arise from deep-seated resentment, or even from love itself. I’ve already said quite a bit, but yes—that’s the general direction of the story.
It’s worth noting that this film is 22 years old, so don’t expect anything spectacular in terms of visuals—but then again, does it really need them? Honestly, no. It’s a very simple film, yet it manages to pack a massive punch through its scenes and the way it builds tension. As I mentioned earlier, the way the terror is manifested is wild; the appearance—specifically the makeup—of the woman in question is incredibly striking. There are also some well-executed jump scares; while they might not terrify you to death, they certainly deliver the necessary shock. The story itself is solid, featuring an unexpected plot twist at the end—a narrative built on past mistakes that come with a heavy price in the present. One of the film’s strengths is that it never gets boring; the plot doesn’t just stall by focusing solely on the spirit’s presence. Instead, it delves into the origin of the haunting, driven by the guilt surrounding an accident and the relentless torment inflicted upon the couple.
The performances are much more restrained and serious compared to what we often see in Korean or Japanese films. This was an unexpected difference, especially since I once watched a Thai horror series where the acting was excellent. That’s not to say the actors are bad—far from it—but the performances lack the effusiveness or intensity one might otherwise expect. That said, whenever the scene calls for it, the actors deliver—whether it’s conveying terror, suspense, bewilderment, anguish, or fear. Ultimately, this is a great, traditional, paranormal-themed horror film, complete with effective scares, jump scares, and some truly disturbing imagery. If you’re a fan of the genre, I highly recommend it; it’s a unique film that has earned its status as a horror classic. It runs for an hour and a half. It’s well worth a watch—I’ve included the trailer below.
Alright folks, that’s all for today—I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
