Do you know the concept of "The Purge"? For those unfamiliar with the movies, it basically depicts a society where, for one night a year, all manner of crimes are permitted—12 hours where you can do whatever you please without facing legal consequences. Well, the film I’m talking about today is essentially the same thing, except that instead of focusing on crime and killing, it centers on a night of total debauchery. While the concept isn't new to me, the specific context makes it feel very different and unique. Don't be misled: this isn't an explicit or adult-oriented film; it’s a classic romantic comedy—the kind I don't usually watch, though one every now and then doesn't hurt.
Cuando hablo de la purga, si conocen el concepto? - para los que no están familiarizados con estas películas básicamente es una sociedad en donde por una noche al año está permitido toda clase de delitos, 12 horas en las que puedes hacer lo que te de la gana y nada te va a pasar, legalmente hablando. Pues este film del que les vengo hablar hoy es prácticamente es lo mismo solo que en vez de enfocarse en delitos y matar gente se centra en una noche de libertinaje total. Como concepto ya es algo que he visto pero con este contexto todo es muy diferente y particular. No se engañen, esto no es una película subida de tono ni para adultos, es la típica comedia romántica, de esas que no veo mucho pero que una de vez en cuando no hace daño.
We are in the United States, but subject to a rule—or rather, a law—that prohibits premarital sex. This means that single people cannot have sexual relations with anyone for 364 days of the year. You might wonder how this is monitored, given that it seems impossible on the surface. Each person carries a nanochip that tracks bodily functions; if readings deviate from the norm, you get caught. But that isn't the main point. The story centers on Allie (Mónica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner): she is a woman who believes in romantic, meaningful love, while he has just been asked by his girlfriend to sleep with another woman—because she wants to do the same with another man (for that night only). Keep in mind, they have a 12-hour window to be with someone. As it happens, these two cross paths in the city, sparking an odyssey as they try to find what everyone is looking for.
Estamos en Estados Unidos pero bajo una regla o más bien una ley: el sexo prematrimonial está prohibido. Esto quiere decir que las personas solteras no pueden tener relaciones sexuales con nadie en 364 días de año. Ustedes se preguntarán, como controlan eso? - porque a priori es algo imposible. Cada persona tiene un nanochip que lee las funciones corporales, al salirse de lo normal pues te pillan. Pero ese no es tanto el asunto. Los protagonistas son Allie (Mónica Barbaro) y Owen (Callum Turner), la primera es una mujer de esas que cree en el amor romántico y con sentido; a él la novia le acaba de pedir que vaya a estar con otra mujer porque ella quiere hacer lo mismo con otro hombre (solo por esa noche). Les recuerdo que tienen 12 horas para poder estar con alguien. El tema es que por casualidades de la vida estas dos personas se encuentran en la ciudad y a partir de ahí comienza una odisea para lograr lo que todos están buscando.
As incredible as it may seem, it all starts with the search for a condom—which, for obvious reasons, have sold out across the city. This kicks off a chaotic race filled with mishaps, random moments, and encounters that ultimately lead nowhere, since nothing seems to go right for them. The premise is that the two were attracted to each other from the start but refused to entertain the possibility; yet, given the series of events they experience over the course of the night, it seems that if destiny truly wants them together, it will happen. As I mentioned, I’m not usually the type to watch movies like this—probably because I’m a bit cynical and assume I won’t like them—but the truth is, the film is actually pretty cool and fun. Once you grasp the concept of that specific night, you know what to expect: total chaos centered on sex, with everyone hooking up with everyone else and trying—in the craziest ways possible—to find a partner, even if just for the night.
Por más increíble que parezca todo inicia con la busqueda de un preservativo los cuales por razones obvias se agotaron en la ciudad lo que da pie a una carrera llena de tropiezos, momentos random y personas en el camino que no terminan en nada porque al final nada les sale bien. La premisa es que los dos desde un principio se gustaron pero se negaron a la posibilidad y si a eso se le suma la cantidad de cosas que terminan viviendo en medio de la noche pues pareciera que si de verdad el destino los quiere juntos así será. Como ya les dije no soy persona de ver este tipo de películas, creo que porque soy un poco cínico y me digo que no me van a gustar, pero la verdad es que el film es bastante cool y divertido. Al tener un poco claro el concepto de esa noche en particular ya uno sabe que esperar, un caos total centrado en el sexo, todo el mundo estando con todo el mundo y buscando, de las maneras más locas, emparejarse así sea por esa noche.
But of course, Allie and Owen aren't really like that. Well, actually they are, but they strongly resist the idea of spending the whole night acting like degenerates. For them, being with someone has to mean something—it’s about a connection that doesn't quite fit the wild, chaotic nature of that night. That attitude leads them into some pretty funny and unusual situations, which is what makes the movie so entertaining to watch. As for why such a law exists, the goal is to prevent teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and to promote the importance of the family unit. Obviously, no one agrees with the law, but it is what it is. The comedy is straightforward—it doesn't rely on dark humor to work; instead, the laughs come from the interactions, the characters, and the absurd situations that unfold. Honestly, the movie feels very wholesome and fresh.
Pero claro, Allie y Owen no son tan así. O bueno si pero se niegan mucho a la idea de ser unos depravados toda la noche. Para ellos el estar con alguien tiene que significar algo y todo un tema de conexiones que no aplica mucho a los que es la locura de esa noche. Esa actitud los lleva a vivir cosas bien graciosas y poco comunes que es lo que hace que la película sea super entretenida de ver. Para los que tengan dudas del porque habría una ley así es porque quieren evitar el embarazo en adolescentes, enfermedades de transmisión sexual y potenciar la figura de la familia. Obviamente nadie está de acuerdo con esa ley pero es lo que hay. La comedia es muy básica en el sentido que no necesita ser negra para que funcione, se da gracias las interacciones, los personajes y las situaciones sin sentido que terminan pasando, es muy sana y fresca la película la verdad.
I’m of the opinion that for this kind of film, there has to be chemistry between the two actors, and Mónica and Callum certainly have it. I’ve seen some of her other work and she’s a very good actress—she’s even been nominated for an Oscar. All I know about him is that he’s Dua Lipa’s husband, but he did a good job too; then again, these types of movies don't exactly require a massive acting range. You’ll also see appearances by people like Maya Hawke, LeVar Burton, Julia Fox, and so on. So, we’ve got comedy and the romantic element—because, naturally, the story heads in that direction toward the end. Speaking of the ending, it’s exactly what you’d expect; I don’t think anything else would have made much sense after a night like that. Well, maybe it could have worked, but it would have been a pretty risky move. I highly recommend it; even though it’s not the sort of thing I usually watch, I really enjoyed it. It runs for a little over an hour and a half. I’m leaving the trailer here so you can see what it’s all about.
Para hacer este tipo de films soy de los que piensa que tiene que haber química entre los dos actores y Mónica y Callum la tienen. He varias cosas de ella y es muy buena actriz, nominada a los Oscar y todo. De él lo unico que se es que es el esposo de Dua Lipa pero también hizo un buen trabajo, en este tipo de películas tampoco se necesita un alto rango actoral. Por ahí salen personas como Maya Hawke, LeVar Burton, Julia Fox, etc. A ver, tenemos comedia, tenemos la parte romántica porque claro, hacia el final la historia se va por ahí la cosa; hablando de su final decir que es lo esperado, todo lo que hubiese sido diferente creo que no hubiera mucho sentido después de haber semejante noche. O bueno quizás si pero hubiese sido bastante arriesgado. Muy recomendada, para no ser lo que acostumbro a ver la pasé muy bien viéndola, se disfruta mucho verla. Dura un poco más de hora y media.
