Neither Rotten Tomatoes nor any other site or portal specializing in film reviews should be taken into account when deciding whether to watch a movie or series, as their ratings often bear little relation to reality. I don't know if the people or critics registered on those sites actually possess the necessary credentials—and I’m not claiming to have them myself—but the fact remains that some things just don't make sense. Emilia Pérez—arguably one of the worst movies ever made—holds the coveted "Certified Fresh" status on that site, whereas the film we’re discussing today, Protector, has a mere 17% approval rating; by their standards, it’s an absolute failure. So, what is the truth? The truth is that this story, starring the great Milla Jovovich, is actually a very good movie; it may not be the best in its genre, but it certainly delivers—and then some.
A Rotten Tomotoes ni a cualquier otra pagina o portal especializado en reseñar films se le debería de tomar en cuenta a la hora de decidir si ver una película/serie ya que generalmente su calificaciones distan mucho de la realidad. No se si las personas o críticos inscritos en esas páginas tengan las credenciales para serlo, no digo que yo la tenga, pero la realidad es que hay cosas que no se entienden. Emilia Pérez, una de las peores películas hechas alguna vez, en dicho portal tiene el famoso "Certified Fresh" mientras que esta de la que vamos a hablar hoy, Protector, tiene apenas un 17% de aprobación, es decir, para los estándares de ellos este films es un fracaso absoluto. Ahora, cual es la verdad? - pues que esta historia protagonizada por la gran Milla Jovovich es una muy buena película, no será la mejor de su género pero cumple y por mucho.
Nikki (Milla Jovovich) is a decorated former U.S. Special Forces soldier—a true hero who saved many lives during her missions. Her service kept her away from her family for years, causing her to miss her daughter growing up and creating a certain emotional distance between them. One day, she decides to leave it all behind—walking away from the soldier's life she loves—to be with her daughter, finish raising her, and share her life with her. However, Nikki is unaware that her world is about to be turned upside down; one night, while at a bar, her 16-year-old daughter—who had run away from home—is kidnapped. Realizing something is terribly wrong, Nikki springs into action, launching a massive pursuit of the men who took her.
Nikki (Milla Jovovich) es una ex soldado condecorada de las Fuerzas Especiales de los Estados Unidos, toda una heroína por haber salvado muchas vidas durante sus misiones. Durante su servicio ella estuvo alejada de su familia durante años privándola de ver crecer a su hija lo que generaba cierto distanciamiento. Un buen día ella decide dejarlo todo, dejar atrás la vida de soldado que tanto le gusta para estar con su hija, para terminarla de criar y compartir con ella. Lo que no sabe Nikki es que su vida está a punto de dar un vuelco y es que una noche, en un bar, a su hija de 16 años que se escapó de casa, la secuestran. Evidentemente ella al notar que las cosas no van bien se percata de eso y comienza una persecución masiva contra los hombres que se la llevaron.
It turns out that those behind everything are a criminal group dedicated to a human trafficking network that calls themselves El Sindicato. These people, as is almost always the case, have a lot of power and a lot of people in their pockets, including police officers that Nikki will have to deal with. To demand even more, she sets a limit of 72 hours, which is the average time in which it is possible to rescue a missing person alive, to delve into this entire criminal network and thus recover her daughter Chloe. As you can see, the plot is one that is well known to everyone, there are infinite films that have been made under this story and yet they continue to be entertaining to watch. The first one that comes to mind is "Taken" by Liam Neeson but there are probably hundreds more. So this makes this film predictable, like the rest? - I'm telling you no because if there's something this movie has, it's a spectacular ending.
Resulta que los que están detrás de todo es un grupo criminal dedicado a una red de trata y trafico de personas que se hacen llamar El Sindicato. Esta gente, como casi siempre pasa, tiene mucho poder y a mucha gente metida en sus bolsillos, incluidos policías con los que Nikki tendrá que lidiar. Para exigirse aún más ella se pone un limite de 72 horas, que es el tiempo promedio en el que es posible rescatar a una persona desaparecida con vida, para adentrarse en todo este entramado criminal y así recuperar a su hija Chloe. Como ven la trama es una que es muy conocida por todos, son infinitas las películas que se han hecho bajo esta historia y aún así siguen siendo entretenidas de ver. La primera que se me viene a la cabeza es "Taken" de Liam Neeson pero seguramente hay cientos más. Esto hace entonces que este film sea predecible, igual al resto? - ya les digo que no porque si hay algo que tiene esta película es un final espectacular.
Let's continue with that point. Usually, films like this end in the most predictable way—just as you imagine when they first start—but that isn't the case here; the major plot twist near the end is something I guarantee no one sees coming. This undoubtedly shifted my perspective a bit; movie endings are crucial, and I think this one absolutely nails the surprise factor. As for the action, we see Milla back in her prime—reminiscent of her Resident Evil days—chasing down targets and taking them out one by one. There is gunfire, brawls, chaos, choreographed sequences, and a vengeful drive to punish those who dared to kidnap a young girl. Nikki is a very "controlling" mother—a result of her own life experiences and her awareness of the world's dangers—which creates friction with her daughter; ultimately, this leads to significant trauma for the girl as feelings of guilt and desperation set in—feelings that will serve as the driving force behind her search.
Y sigamos por allí. Generalmente estos film terminan de la forma más básica y como uno se los imagina cuando apenas comienza pero esto no es así, el señor plot twist que tiene hacia su final es uno que les aseguro nadie espera. Esto sin dudas hizo que mi percepción cambiara un poco, los finales de las películas son muy importantes y creo que este cumple a cabalidad con el factor sorpresa. En lo que a la acción se refiera pues vemos a una Milla como en sus mejores tiempos, aquellos de Resident Evil, persiguiendo a sus objetivos y eliminándolos uno a uno. Hay disparos, peleas, caos, escenas coreografiadas y ese espíritu de venganza por querer hacerles daño a los que osaron secuestrar a una joven. Nikki como madre es muy "controladora" porque su vida ha sido así y porque conoce los peligros del mundo; esto genera ciertos roces con su hija lo que al final se va a materializar en un trauma importante para ella cuando comiencen a aparecer esos sentimientos de culpa y desesperación. Sentimientos que usará como motor para su busqueda.
The whole movie is Milla Jovovich. We see her live in a very raw and visceral way not being able to be with her daughter; There are scenes where desperation breaks her and we see quite a vivid performance. It doesn't disappoint with the action, it still moves, fights well and has good gun handling. In other words I think it is very solvent. In short, this is a film in which clearly what counts is the opinion of the people, I think that those who see it agree that it is a decent film; I repeat, it is not the best because the plot and the script have a couple of inconsistencies but it is still one that can be seen without problems. Maybe when you're watching it you want to anticipate what might happen, sometimes I do, that's part of being a little cynical with cinema in not trusting that there could be a plot change but I assure you that with this one you're going to fail in that attempt. Highly recommended to be honest, it is a short film of just an hour and a half exactly. Below I put the trailer so you can familiarize yourself with the relentless Milla Jovovich.
Toda la película es Milla Jovovich. La vemos vivir de una manera muy cruda y visceral el no poder estar con su hija; hay escenas en donde la desesperación la rompe y vemos una actuación bastante vívida. No defrauda con la acción, todavía se mueve, pelea bien y tiene un buen manejo de armas. En otras palabras creo que es muy solvente. En fin, esta es una película en la que claramente lo que vale es la opinión de la gente, pienso que los que la ven coinciden que es una película decente; repito, no es la mejor porque la trama y el guion tiene un par de inconsistencias pero igual es una que se ve sin problemas. Puede que cuando la estén viendo se quieran anticipar a lo que pueda pasar, a veces lo hago, eso es parte de ser un poco cínico con el cine en no confiar de que pueda haber un cambio de trama pero les aseguro que con esta van a fallar en ese intento. Muy recomendada la verdad, es un film corto de apenas hora y media exacta. Por acá abajo les pongo el tráiler para que se familiaricen con la implacable Milla Jovovich.
