[Movie] Apaches: Gang of Paris

This is the second feature film from Romain Quirot—whose debut received terrible reviews (though I haven't seen it)—and this time he opted for a gangster story, but one set in the past. Just as England had the Peaky Blinders, France had criminal gangs that wreaked havoc on the streets of Paris in the early 20th century.

The film's plot is entirely fictional, though it is based on a real element: the Parisian criminal gangs known as the "Apaches." If you look up information about them, you’ll discover why they chose that name; a journalist of the era compared the violence they inflicted on their victims to the violence seen in stories about the American Wild West.

At first, I thought the story was based on Amélie Élie—a prostitute who was part of that criminal underworld and became so famous that a movie was even made about her in the 1950s—but no; as the plot unfolded, I realized it had nothing to do with her. It is a story set in that era and centered on the Apaches, but it is completely fictional.

It is a classic revenge story. The protagonist, a woman named Billie, has waited years to take justice into her own hands. The most important thing in her life was taken from her, and she will never forget it. She needs to quench her thirst for revenge and unleash the uncontrollable rage she carries inside.

It doesn't reinvent the wheel. It works well as a revenge story, but what gives it a fresh feel is the setting: early 20th-century Paris, a time of rapid change. We see the protagonist as a child, and by the time she reaches adulthood, technology has advanced significantly for that period. For instance, the city transitioned from horse-drawn carriages to being filled with automobiles. Yet, what didn't change was the crime, prostitution, violence, and corruption.

I think what struck me most was the visual aspect; There are truly beautiful, colorful scenes. The cinematographer's use of color is what really makes this film stand out. Of course, I also liked the story: it has a striking opening and never gets boring. I found it entertaining, and that’s enough for me.

Billie is played by actress Alice Isaaz; she is very beautiful, but she also has a wild look in her eyes that makes her character fascinating. You can sense that inner rage, that desire to wipe them all out. Naturally, in stories like this, moral conflicts arise—especially when she starts connecting with the very people she is supposed to eliminate. She manages to infiltrate their circle and grows fond of some of them, even her primary target.

I’m drawn to characters like that: blonde women with blood-splattered faces. Much like Samara Weaving in the various films where she ends up covered in blood, the French actress delivers magnificent moments here, sporting that fake blood on her pale face. Is this another one of my weird fetishes? I don't know; maybe.

No reinventa nada. Funciona bien como historia de venganza, pero lo que le aporta frescura es la ambientación: el París de principios del siglo XX, una época de cambios vertiginosos. Vemos a la protagonista de niña y, cuando llega a la edad adulta, la tecnología ha avanzado notablemente para aquel entonces. Por ejemplo, la ciudad pasó de los carruajes de caballos a estar llena de automóviles. Sin embargo, lo que no cambió fue la delincuencia, la prostitución, la violencia y la corrupción.

Creo que lo que más me llamó la atención fue el aspecto visual; hay escenas realmente hermosas y llenas de color. El uso del color por parte del director de fotografía es lo que realmente hace destacar a esta película. Por supuesto, la historia también me pareció buena: tiene un comienzo impactante y nunca llega a aburrir. Me pareció entretenida, y eso me basta.

Billie es interpretada por la actriz Alice Isaaz; es muy hermosa, pero también tiene una mirada salvaje que hace que su personaje resulte fascinante. Se percibe esa rabia interior, ese deseo de acabar con todos ellos. Como es natural en historias de este tipo, surgen conflictos morales, sobre todo cuando empieza a conectar con las mismas personas a las que debe eliminar. Logra integrarse en su círculo y llega a cogerles cariño a algunos de ellos, incluso a su objetivo principal.

Me atraen personajes así: mujeres rubias con el rostro salpicado de sangre. Al igual que Samara Weaving en varias de las películas en las que termina cubierta de sangre, la actriz francesa protagoniza aquí momentos magníficos luciendo esa sangre artificial sobre su rostro pálido. ¿Será este otro de mis fetiches raros? No lo sé; tal vez.
