[Movie] Breathe:Transgénesis

I have watched several Argentine films lately, but none inspired me to write anything until I came across this thriller set in rural Argentina. That setting never fails. If you want to make a thriller, the countryside is the ideal place to generate tension and create an unsettling atmosphere. That is simply the nature of remote towns. I remember visiting isolated villages in my homeland when I was young; the locals would look at you strangely.

The film effectively combines suspense, action, and even a critique of a problem affecting many people linked to agriculture. It is no secret that huge quantities of pesticides and chemicals are used on crops of all kinds today. Although they are said to be regulated and harmless, in reality, they do affect human health.

The situation becomes especially critical in areas lacking oversight and rife with corruption, as is the case in many Spanish-American countries. Corruption exists everywhere, of course, but it seems more widespread in Latin America—likely due to the region's inclination toward leftist policies; those regimes are experts at destroying everything they touch.

The film addresses precisely this issue: the reckless, unregulated use of chemicals, with local authorities colluding with the major corporations responsible for them. This leads to serious illnesses among the local population, farming families, and agricultural workers. A quick internet search reveals numerous reports in Argentina regarding rising rates of cancer and other diseases in agricultural areas. Gabriel Grieco wrote and directed the film, demonstrating that it is possible to create something entertaining—with good scenes of tension, death, and suspense—while simultaneously raising awareness about a problem currently affecting those regions of his country.

The plot revolves around Leticia and Gerardo, a married couple facing difficulties after he is fired from his job as a commercial airline pilot. They have a son named Manuel, and Gerardo gets an opportunity to work in a small town piloting light aircraft to spray crops with chemicals. At first, everything seems to be going well, but clashes with the locals turn the family's first day into a nightmare, and dark, hidden agendas come to light. A sense of danger is palpable from the moment they set foot in the town.

Leticia is played by actress Sofía Gala. I’ve seen her in other productions; she is quite well-known in her home country due to various controversies in her personal life. One of the most scandalous incidents involved revelations that, at age 15, she had a romance with a man nearly forty years old. There have been other controversies, though I don't really follow that kind of content; I’ve only come across the headlines. Her character in the film is quite irritating; she spends the whole time badgering the poor man. She comes across as stubborn and bad-tempered for most of the movie, making the character far from likable.

Últimamente he visto varias películas argentinas, pero ninguna me inspiró a escribir nada hasta que di con este thriller ambientado en la zona rural de Argentina. Ese escenario nunca falla. Si quieres hacer un thriller, el campo es el lugar ideal para generar tensión y crear una atmósfera inquietante. Así son los pueblos remotos. Recuerdo haber visitado aldeas aisladas en mi tierra cuando era joven; los lugareños te miraban de forma extraña.

La película combina eficazmente el suspenso, la acción e incluso una crítica a un problema que afecta a muchas personas vinculadas a la agricultura. No es ningún secreto que hoy en día se utilizan enormes cantidades de pesticidas y productos químicos en cultivos de todo tipo. Aunque se diga que están controlados y son inofensivos, en realidad sí afectan a la salud humana.

La situación se vuelve especialmente crítica en zonas donde falta supervisión y abunda la corrupción, como ocurre en muchos países hispanoamericanos. La corrupción existe en todas partes, por supuesto, pero parece estar más extendida en América Latina, probablemente debido a la inclinación de la región hacia políticas de izquierda; esos regímenes son expertos en destruir todo lo que tocan.

La película aborda precisamente este tema: el uso imprudente y sin regulación de productos químicos, con autoridades locales que se confabulan con las grandes corporaciones responsables de ellos. Esto provoca enfermedades graves entre la población local, las familias agricultoras y los trabajadores del campo. Una búsqueda rápida en internet revela numerosos informes en Argentina sobre el aumento de las tasas de cáncer y otras enfermedades en zonas agrícolas. Gabriel Grieco escribió y dirigió la película, demostrando que es posible crear algo entretenido —con buenas escenas de tensión, muerte y suspenso— y, al mismo tiempo, concienciar sobre un problema que afecta actualmente a esas regiones de su país.

La trama gira en torno a Leticia y Gerardo, un matrimonio que atraviesa dificultades tras el despido de él como piloto de aviación comercial. Tienen un hijo llamado Manuel, y a Gerardo le surge la oportunidad de trabajar en un pueblo pequeño pilotando avionetas para fumigar cultivos con productos químicos. Al principio todo parece ir bien, pero los enfrentamientos con los lugareños convierten su primer día en un infierno para la familia, y salen a la luz oscuros intereses ocultos. La sensación de peligro es palpable desde el momento en que pisan el pueblo.

Leticia es interpretada por la actriz Sofía Gala. La he visto en otras producciones; es bastante conocida en su país natal debido a diversas polémicas en su vida personal. Uno de los incidentes más escandalosos tuvo que ver con las revelaciones de que, a los 15 años, mantuvo un romance con un hombre de casi cuarenta años. Ha habido otras polémicas, aunque en realidad no sigo ese tipo de contenido; solo me he topado con los titulares. Su personaje en la película resulta bastante irritante; se pasa todo el tiempo molestando al pobre hombre. Se muestra obstinada y de mal genio durante la mayor parte del filme, lo que hace que el personaje no resulte nada agradable.
