[TV] Coppola, the Agent

A real bombshell!

For most of us, the name Guillermo Esteban Coppola might not mean anything; however, for Argentines and fans of Diego Maradona, it is instantly recognizable. He became Maradona’s agent and remained by his side for nearly 20 years—not only in a professional capacity but also as a close friend—and, naturally, he was the one who handled most of the messes Diego got himself into.

I watched the first season of this series a while ago and thought I had written a review back then; but, upon checking on Hive, I realized that I hadn’t actually recommended it yet. I don’t recall exactly why I put off posting a review—perhaps because I watched it during a particularly difficult period in my own life. In any case, a few days ago, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the second season had been released. I had no idea there would be a new batch of episodes, and I was delighted, as the first season was excellent; I had certainly been left wanting more of this version of Coppola.

The Argentine actor Juan Minujín is a true chameleon—he transforms completely, from his physique to his makeup and hairstyle—and his portrayal of this real-life figure is fantastic and highly entertaining. He embodies a very peculiar character: a man whose life spiraled into excess, fueled by the wealth and fame he gained as Maradona’s agent. He indulged in alcohol, drugs, and women—many women—because, if there’s one thing to know about Coppola, it’s that he is a natural-born womanizer. And, of course, his money ensured that even the most beautiful and famous women would fall at his feet, despite the fact that he wasn’t exactly a handsome man. This perfectly illustrates the old saying: "There are no ugly men, only poor men." The energy the actor brings to his portrayal of Coppola is incredible. The situations depicted—embellished, naturally, with a touch of fiction and humor to make them more palatable—reflect the various predicaments he has to resolve. Maradona’s life was filled with surreal moments that provide excellent entertainment material: events that seem unreal, yet actually took place. From the black Ferrari and the episode involving the Pope, to the fire at Diego’s home, the series takes real historical events and fictionalizes them for our enjoyment. It is worth noting that no one plays the role of Maradona; in this production, "Diego" remains off-camera, as the focus is entirely on the life of his agent, Coppola.

This is not a "serious" biography; the series takes certain creative liberties to ensure it remains entertaining for the viewer. Coppola, who is still alive, has been at the center of numerous controversies throughout his life. In an interview about the series, he expressed no complaints; on the contrary, he emphasized that it is a work of fiction that approaches—in a lighthearted and engaging way—periods that were, in reality, quite difficult for many people. He has taken it all in stride, choosing to focus on the amusing aspects rather than any potential discrepancies.

Each episode tells the story in its own way, with a pace and a series of comedic situations that will likely captivate most viewers. Even those who know nothing about this figure, soccer, or Maradona will enjoy the series, as the version of Coppola presented here functions as a fully realized character in his own right. That said, I am certain that the series fails to capture the true magnitude of these events and that, in real life, things were, in fact, far more complex.

I highly recommend it; I have included the trailers for both seasons below, in case you need a little nudge to decide to watch it. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    Gracias JC!!
