This film by Nacho Vigalondo had been on my "to-watch" list for a while; I finally got to see it yesterday, and it left a very positive impression. What more could you ask for? The story offered a bit of everything I enjoy. I must admit that the beginning left me a bit cold—the first few minutes didn’t quite resonate with me—but then the magic kicked in, and I found myself completely engaged with the film.

Although it is a Spanish film, it is shot in English, likely to reach an English-speaking audience directly. I’ve mentioned Vigalondo before; he’s a filmmaker I’ve followed since he gained international recognition with his hit Los cronocrímenes (Timecrimes). I believe the last work of his that I recommended was the miniseries Superstar, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

In Daniela Forever, the director returns to the realm of fantasy and science fiction, without needing to spend a fortune on special effects. The premise is quite unique—or, to put it more precisely, it is a beautiful love story. The film blends science fiction with romance, while tackling serious themes like grief and the loss of a loved one, all without losing its sense of humor.

While some of the more comedic scenes border on the absurd, they succeed in giving the narrative a dynamic and entertaining tone. What I found most fascinating was the exploration of lucid dreaming: the protagonist, who needs to overcome the trauma of his loss, ends up doing the exact opposite—becoming increasingly trapped in an emotional dependency. The filmmaker uses distinct color palettes to help us distinguish between the world of lucid dreams and reality; though, in the final third, the boundaries between the two realms blur to such an extent that, at a certain point, it’s impossible to tell whether we are witnessing a dream within a dream. In truth, that doesn’t really matter; there’s no need to rack your brain searching for an explanation. My advice is simply to go with the flow and enjoy the journey. I found the ending quite moving; the fact that it managed to make me feel both sadness and joy at the same time left me satisfied with the film. I wouldn’t call it the filmmaker’s best work, but I certainly connected with it—amidst all the madness and a few excesses, the love story completely captivated me.

The choices made by Nicolas, the protagonist, are the same ones I would have made in his position; I really identified with the character. You know you’re truly in love when you’re willing to sacrifice everything.

Esta película de Nacho Vigalondo llevaba un tiempo en mi lista de «pendientes»; por fin pude verla ayer y me dejó una impresión muy positiva. ¿Qué más se puede pedir? La historia ofrecía un poco de todo lo que me gusta. Debo admitir que el comienzo me dejó algo frío —los primeros minutos no terminaron de impactarme—, pero luego surgió la magia y logré conectar por completo con la cinta.

Aunque es una película española, está rodada en inglés, probablemente para llegar directamente a un público angloparlante. Ya he hablado de Vigalondo anteriormente; es un cineasta al que sigo desde que alcanzó el reconocimiento internacional con su exitosa Los cronocrímenes (Timecrimes). Creo que lo último suyo que recomendé fue la miniserie Superstar, que disfruté muchísimo.

En Daniela Forever, el director regresa al terreno de lo fantástico y la ciencia ficción, sin necesidad de gastar una fortuna en efectos especiales. La premisa es muy singular; o, dicho de forma más precisa, se trata de una hermosa historia de amor. El filme combina la ciencia ficción con el romance, al tiempo que aborda temas serios como el duelo y la pérdida de un ser querido, todo ello sin perder el sentido del humor.

Si bien algunas de las escenas más cómicas rozan lo absurdo, logran dotar a la narración de un tono dinámico y entretenido. Lo que me resultó más fascinante fue la exploración de los sueños lúcidos: el protagonista, que necesita superar el trauma de su pérdida, termina haciendo exactamente lo contrario: quedar cada vez más atrapado en una dependencia emocional. El cineasta emplea distintas paletas de color para que podamos distinguir si nos encontramos en el universo de los sueños lúcidos o en la realidad; aunque, en el último tercio, los límites entre ambos planos se difuminan tanto que llega un punto en el que ya no sabemos si estamos ante un sueño dentro de otro sueño. En realidad, eso no importa; no hace falta romperse la cabeza buscando una explicación. Mi consejo es simplemente dejarse llevar y disfrutar del viaje. El desenlace me resultó bastante conmovedor; el hecho de que lograra hacerme sentir tristeza y alegría al mismo tiempo me dejó satisfecho con la película. No diría que es la mejor obra del cineasta, pero sin duda conecté con ella: entre tanta locura y algunos excesos, la historia de amor me cautivó por completo.

Las decisiones que toma Nicolas, el protagonista, son las mismas que yo habría tomado en su lugar; me identifiqué mucho con el personaje. Uno sabe que está realmente enamorado cuando está dispuesto a sacrificarlo todo.
