A while back, I came across the following quote on a website featuring quotes from books: “Anyone who doesn’t understand your silences will most likely not understand your words either,” by Elbert Hubbard. That made me think so deeply that I’ve never forgotten it, because the truth is that speaking has always been considered the only form of communication and, therefore, the only way to truly understand another person.

But beyond that, the quote resonated with me because everyone is drawn to what they identify with. In my case, I’m a fairly quiet person and don’t usually talk much with others. That said, I’m very clear that communication is extremely important and that, while it’s a challenge for me, I do it because I know it always yields positive results. But speaking of silence again, the quote I mentioned made me realize that there are also other ways to communicate.

In my case, I feel like I’ve learned a somewhat different way of communicating. Because I have a reserved and quiet personality, I’ve developed other skills—at least the ability to be very observant. I can sense when something is bothering someone even if they don’t say anything, because I pay close attention. But even though I see this as a skill, I’m not always considered a communicative person, even though I do consider myself to be one.

I feel that all of this comes down to the fact that we’ve learned that being able to make ourselves heard and express our thoughts is what helps others get to know us and, therefore, understand us. And while a good part of it is about that, over time—and based on my reserved and quiet personality—I’ve learned that there are things you can only learn about someone when they’re silent. When I was younger, I used to get a little frustrated because what I said was sometimes misinterpreted—and that’s what happens with words; they can be interpreted however the other person wants.

There are times when someone might just need a little companionship rather than words, and that’s okay because it’s when words are absent that you can learn a little more about a person without relying solely on what they’re saying. Without needing to be entertained by a piece of gossip or a story they might tell you, there’s the opportunity to truly see them—to observe their gestures, the way they look at you, what they pay attention to, and above all, the affection they feel, which isn’t based on the other person validating you with their words.

There’s something ingrained in us that tells us that the more a person talks—or the more we make them talk—the more successful we’ll be in a relationship. But the reality is that part of getting to know someone is also learning to observe in silence and still feel comfortable without needing to say anything just to fill that silence. From my perspective, communication and silence go hand in hand because we sometimes need to be quiet in order to hear what isn’t said with words.

Like everything else, there must be a good balance. Although words are very important and necessary for communicating what we feel and what’s inside us, it’s our actions, the way we look at things, and even the way we react that reveal what someone is really like. Because yes, knowing how to remain silent—knowing how to be in silence—is a skill that allows you to get to know the other person on a deeper level.
