A while back, I read a book that had been recommended to me, and although at first I read it out of a sense of obligation—because, to be honest, it didn’t really grab my attention—I gradually began to see it in a different light. The book is Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky, which was published over 100 years ago, but many consider it a very good book—as does the person who recommended it to me.
It’s written in the first person and narrated by a former Russian civil servant now in his fourth decade of life, who has endured many hardships that he remembers as if they were yesterday. He tells us about his current life in a rather ironic yet deeply painful way, and his contempt for humanity is palpable in every line of this book.
I really liked the way the book is written and how the protagonist expresses himself, because it makes you feel like you’re talking to a real person who trusts you enough to share part of his life story and everything that troubles him—even if he doesn’t say it directly. As I read it, I really appreciate how the protagonist makes it very clear what he’s like, allowing you to get to know him well as you read.
This former Russian official clings to a life he no longer has, trying to solve problems that ceased to exist long ago. He remains so attached to it because he’s absolutely certain that if he does, his life will be set right, so he lives obsessed with things that, honestly, can never be changed—especially since he himself remains the same person, which is quite contradictory.

The book gave me several things to think about, starting with the fact that awareness alone can’t lead you to do what you need to do. Sometimes a very self-aware person knows what they need to improve and what they need to work on within themselves, but somehow clings to all their flaws and fails to face what is so clear to them—and from the outside, one might say, “How silly—they lack willpower.”
On the other hand, it made me think a great deal about those repetitive thoughts that make us live in a time that’s long since passed. The desire to fix something from the past is logical because we’ve all made mistakes or missed opportunities, but life is so burdensome when you spend every day of your existence wishing to go back to the past because you believe that changing something in your history will completely transform your life—and that gradually eats away at you from the inside.
I also thought about how we often have an enemy inside us that wants to destroy us, and sometimes this enemy stems from the way we were raised or what we’ve learned throughout life from all the difficult situations we’ve faced. You could say that many people are their own tormentors and go through life trying to punish themselves—sometimes unconsciously—for the things that didn’t turn out as they’d hoped.
I feel like this is a very profound book in which, even if you don’t say so openly, you can find a little bit of yourself—perhaps in things a bit simpler than those experienced by the protagonist of this book. It’s a book that demands your attention, and, of course, you need to get to know the character, understand him, and learn from him. It’s a pretty interesting read that I personally enjoyed, so if you like honest books and psychological and philosophical novels, you’re sure to like this one.
